Title: Oil leak side of the engine battery side
Post by: Brad Gill on September 30, 2013, 09:42:28 pm
Alright guys after removing my air box i have noticed i have a leak from the right hand side of the engine. between the engine and the battery. The top of the gearbox is covered in oil also. Could this be a cam cover gasket? I was going to De grease the engine and then see if i can see a obvious leak. Just wanted to see if anyone had same problem.

Regards

Brad

The oil is over the top of the gearbox. around the where the springs are in the picture and half way up the cover part

Any Ideas?

I had to sign up after reading this thread!

Only just purchased an 06 mk5 gti DSG in Tornado Red and have noticed a little dribble of oil in exactly the same place as OP.

Not very familiar with the 2.0 TFSI. Is anyone able to kindly shed any light on this? :notworthy: Hoping I haven't bought myself a lemon... :sad1:

First post so please go easy on me.
Many thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same problem. Engine leaks oil at the exact place from somewhere. Struggling to find out from where. I have a 06 gti DSG. Please let us know if you find where it comes from.

If the PCV valve has been changed and the old gasket used (new gasket/seal is £20.14) it can result in oil in that area!

Cheers dude but running a pcv delete and the area round thats dry.

im reasonably confident its the vac pump but im not sure whether others have sorted the same leak by doing just the o ring, or needing to do the whole pump  :scared:

thanks for the suggestion tho!

That drawing implies to me the smallest form it's sold in is the vacuum pump.

I think its down to poor design i think the new pump is a revised design cant remember. I presuming its the same issue i have. I was will sort it eventually but for now it doesnt csuse me to many problems. Iirc the new part was around 300 plus.

I have the same issue on my ED 30 and the specialist I go to for servicing etc said its relatively common and not to worry unless the leak is severe. Given that I'm not eating oil and no other problems he suggested holding on until I have the next cambelt/water pump change and then he can have another/closer look as he thinks its just a minor fault with the engine design and shouldn't cause any problems.

Put me at ease seeing others have this leak as well tbh but I appreciate it would be nice to clear it up. I get oil in that area but no dripping oil on the drive etc.

Mine had this when I purchased it.

The vacuum pump that sits on the cam chain housing has a o ring seal. Take a note of the part number and pop alone to local dealer. Circa £10 and should fix it.

Have the gearbox out of my Edition30 and I noticed mine was leaking from the bottom right corner.  Stuck the ratchet on the bottom torx bolts and surprisingly got a good couple of turns on them so hoping that will stop the slight leak.
