was wondering if anyone here has had any experience of driving some of the other cars in its class like the megane r26, civic type r, ford st, cupra etc
as i am preety much new to the club and car in every sense it would intresting to know how people compare them, i was really set on getting a megane r26 but ultimatley for me its the comfort, practicality that goes along with the performace of the gti....plus it seems preety simple to tune from what i hear.......
anyone had any experiences of challenges at the lights? any good races? i dont think from what ive read the gti is up there in terms of speed wit some but it bloody well feels alot quicker than what the stats tell me!
-
ED30 is the one to go for if you want a golf.
Leon Cupra is the one to go for if you want the same chassis as the golf, but cheaper and with better brakes.
S3 is the one to go for if you want 4wd to give you the extra traction and nicer interior.
Focus RS is better than all 3 but pretty dear, and a remapped ed30, cupra etc will pass a Focus RS with pure ease.
Remapped cupra ed30 is also quicker than a evo fq 330 in a straightline.
-
id much rather have an s3 over a focus rs but yeah tuning wise the ed30, s3 and cupra are way ahead of the rest.
-
sick, i was thinking to get an evo at one point but it comes with such a bloody bad label round my ends i would probably be getting pulled over every other day!
ed30 seems the one alot are talking about , maybe a possible upgrade in the future......i was tinking if i like the gti to go for the r32 next but it seems too much more expensive plus ed30 as you and many have said is really goood for tuning.....

r32 is slow, my standard cupra used to push my mates one down the road.
Sounds nice though.

I have to agree with RobH. The TFSI engine VAG hatches with the K04 are the ones to go for.
Just be aware that you can spend an inordinate amount of money on modifying them....
Brakes at £2k
Suspension at £2k
Intake at £300
HPFP at up to £700
Remap at £500
Exhaust at up to £1.3k
Larger intercooler at £500
Wheels/tyre upgrades at £1k to £XXXX
Quaife diff at £1.5k fitted
Add just that little lot up and you get the picture, however an ED30 with those mods would see just about anything off this side of a tuned Porsche :happy2:
-

....Plenty of challenges. I don't respond and would advise anyone else not to.

But a remapped RS and FQ330 would be quicker than a mapped ed30, cupra so no point in comparing :stupid:
-
after looking at the r26 myself before going for the golf, apart from the only colour available seeming to be asbo yellow at the moment they dont quite meet the image of a golf gti.
i loved the seats in the r26, it has a LSD, after a map its 260bhp, xenon's are standard, along with cruise control AND its cheaper. But when you down the pub explaining this you feel like....had i bought the golf all i would have needed to say is, yea i drive a gti. :signLOL:

Ehhh yes there is
Brand New Leon Cupra 18k.
Brand new Focus RS 25K
Brand new Evo FQ 30K.
So for 18,500 pounds you can get a car thats quicker than the two above with alot of spare change. Hell lets say another 5k on top for stage 2 plus spec and a diff and you have a car that will annilathe the evo and the rs and it will still be 2 grand cheaper than he focus.
So far as im considered you can compare them, especially seeing as the Evo and RS both top out at 380hp on the standard turbo but weight alot more though.
So a stage 2 plus cupra/ed3 will just be as quick as a stage 2 evo or rs.

I can only comment on the Civic Type-R (01-06 shape) as I used to have one before the Golf. It was a lovely motor in all honesty. It sounded well, went well and handled well when you were gunning it! The only draw backs and to me they were significant were:
RIDE: Amazing on a lovely smooth B road and a track - how often have you been on one of them!? Its was too firm and just bounced you off course unless you were at maximum attack. Also it was sh*t in the wet and had about as much traction as a dog on lino!
TYRES: It ruins the rear tyres due to the setup and well, kills the front ones too.
:happy2:

my mate has had a focus now for about a month and imo a re mapped ed 30 will struggle to keep up let alone pass it with ease !!!!!! :scared:

The CTR is a cross between the gti and R26, it is more refined than the R26 but not as quick. Its quicker than a GTI though but not as refined. GTI is a great all rounder, R32 is a better al rounder but lower mpg and cost more to tune (but is more tunable than a gti if you have the money) S3 a cross between gti and R32 and so the best to tune though engine is not as nice as R32. Cupra is nice but interior and build is not as good as VW/Audi, its still good but you can see why they cost less, good second hand cars though as you get loads for your money! Not driven a R26 so cant fully comment.
Theres always the RS, Audi A3 3.2, Alfa 147 GTA, Astra VXR, Corolla VVTI etc etc
Each one has positives and flaws, there is no perfect car, just one that fits your needs.

Think you wanna get yours looked at then mate, two lads I know have one, and my revo cupra beats them pretty easy tbh, even 3 man up. They werent happy to say the least lol. This is all down a airfield though, so corners is another story. RS stays glued to the road.
-
very tempyed by the rs myself, the ede30 is of course awesome fun the rs just seems like a great package, and very tunible :happy2:
i know it has a chavy reputation though it is still very rare and hence always seem to admire whe I see them.
I see a white one most days whih just looks great :congrats:

most cars do :happy2:

Or there is always the Mk1 Focus RS, lighter than the others and very easily moddified and cheap too, most running between the 280 - 320bhp mark and a quick turbo change can see anything from 330 - 380bhp, all this for £2.5k!
Suspension already there, Quaife already there, money buys you:
Bluefin
Full exhaust
Manifold
Induction kit
Actuator
AP 2 piece discs
Hybrid
Other than that, the ED30 is good, I know Ben on here (Vtec Abuser) and he mullered myself on the 30-130 day (albiet with more power) but as has been said, they all have there pro's and con's! :happy2:

my mates is a demo , he works for ford , he s a very good driver and it fu%*&ng flies its glued to the road (he says as good as 4 wd) . my ed 30 is fast dont get me wrong but with only stage 1 re map not as quick as the RS may be your mates RS needs a driver or looking at :driver:
-
Im sure working for ford he tries lots of 4wd cars to compare to :signLOL:
I wonder how 'as good as a 4wd' it is in the wet. Had a run against a mapped vxr and mini cooper s the other week and the vxr was faster from various speeds (mini was about equal), it then flash flooded (very heavy rain) an i just sailed past him as he span up. Im dying to meet an RS to see how it copes with english weather

Mate honestly, its been already proven by a major publication that in a straight line a mountune mapped ST is quicker than the RS. A mapped k04 makes more power than the rs,and has more torque and is lighter in the first place. The RS cant beat a mapped k04 even with a second head start.
I have plenty of experience with the RS now, two different cars, two different drivers, always the same outcome.
-
I wonder how a remapped RS would fair, would have too much power and just spin?
Im not suprised a KO4 is quicker, they push out 330bhp dont they? The RS 'only' has 300.
-
A remapped RS gets 340bhp and 397lbft straight off. It would be a close call between the two when both remapped as the ED30 is around 100kg lighter. Give the ED30 a DSG and I'd suspect thaat the ED30 would still be the quicker point to point car.

Not to mention looks nicer, is nicer to be inside and is a lot cheaper!

In top spec on the standard turbo the RS should see 375hp according to pumaspeed. The RS will make quite a bit more torque though than a top spec k04 car but its still heavier so it will be interesting to see how things turn out. One of my mates is gonna build his RS up to top spec but it will be a while still as it only has 500 odd miles on the clock.
Just checked the rs spec and it will kick out 440lbft/596nm of torque. Highest torque figure I have evr come across on a k04 is 507nm.
Will the extra 80lbft of torque propple the RS infront? I think it just might, time to put mine on a diet maybe lol, loose another 100kgs
-
didn't the rs get beat by the renault megane r26r on topgear? that seems like the more fun car to drive from what they are saying.....

yeah round the track, but for everyday living and driving the RS is better.
-
yeah it seems more practical than the megane, personally for that kind of power level i would move up to an evo, i would be too paranoid about pushing the car too much, rather have something made to meet that power standard.....shame evo's are known as drug dealer cars round my ends :sad1:

well we ve not had them head to head but the focus feels quicker , i prefere my ed 30 but the focus is a great car

he worked for ralliart mitsubishi before ford so yes he does have 4 wd experience !!!!!!!
astra vxr s are  my ed 30 leaves them like there in reverse :happy2:

Totally agree John (and with Poverty).. Sorry CandyTurbo..
The RS has been timed in many different tests now and and evrytime it is putting down 0-100mph times of around 14 secs, which is sloooooow for 300bhp (even if it is 1467kgs). As an comparison, I had mine timed by the same Racelogic V Box they used and ran a 11.1 sec 0-100mph. So would love to see what a mapped/TBE'd RS would do, but I think it would still struggle to shake off a DSG equipped Ed30 with the same mods, not to mention a Stage 2+ equipped one. As it was still behind the Mountune ST at 130mph when tested in EVO mag and that is 40bhp down on the RS.
But as for a mapped ED30 vs Standard RS, if both drivers are equal, in a straight line (obviously) the Ed30 should have the legs with reasonable ease. Same power and over 100kgs difference tells you that..
Lovely car though, especially in white.. Really lloking forward to see what these Pumabuild / Jam Sport / Dream Science cars do when timed. But until they run a 12 sec 1/4 at Pod, i'll sleep ok for now.. :signLOL:
-
RS is stunning from the outside, the cheap plasticy interior kills it ! :sad1:

i m not a figures type i like a car for how it drives and feels , i dont want a dsg , i dont care how many tenths of a second to 60 quiker the car is all im saying is that a standard RS feels quicker than my mapped ed 30 with gears
and i agree the interior is pants , apart from the seats :happy2:
-
i ll ask my mate if he can make it to the next pod meet , that should be interesting
-
after looking at the r26 myself before going for the golf, apart from the only colour available seeming to be asbo yellow at the moment they dont quite meet the image of a golf gti.
i loved the seats in the r26, it has a LSD, after a map its 260bhp, xenon's are standard, along with cruise control AND its cheaper. But when you down the pub explaining this you feel like....had i bought the golf all i would have needed to say is, yea i drive a gti. :signLOL:
cheaper? how much is a golf? friend of mine paid 17 new, dont know where you lot get this mith from, yeah its cheap for what you get but not cheaper, as for explaining the image! sorry i may get slated for this but golf gtis are driven by reps!!!!cos there soft, ed 30 with map, brakes, suspension and diff is a golf! cant compare a gti to the meg, rant over.
-
Yeah I appreciate that you may not take into account a few tenths here and there regarding performance of a car and focus more and how it drives and feels mate, as that is the most important thing when chosing a car after all. All I was trying to explain was that you said in your previous posts that the RS was by no means slower than a mapped Ed30 and if anything faster. Yet when it has been tested the times tell a different story.
I agree not everyone is in to 1/4 mile, 0-100 times etc. But the clock doesn't lie and a second or two difference on either test is a big difference on the road and when I say that I don't mean one will disappear into the hoizon difference. But it can be different as in a fair few car lengths etc, like say the difference between a standard GTI and standard Ed30 for example..

Not sure if Tom has had his S3 on the rollers or not. But I don't think it's any quicker than any other S3 should be. Tom got good results at Inters, as he had Revo software, S tronic (DSG) box (4WD obviously) and the most important ingredient of all, a decent driver..
-
i dont see the std RS coming close to a ed30 stage 2 or stage 3.
my car prior to the new map was only running 259bhp, 289Ibft and the focus that was in front of me at the barrier for the nurburgring didnt exactly drive away like i thought it would have. he did beat me hands down, but not anything like i thought he was going to, he was only pulling away from me slowly. Now ive got stage2+ it'd be even less. couldnt stay with him in the corners though :ashamed:
plus like someone said earlier, the stage 2 mountune eclipsed the RS and was 40bhp down. A stage 3 ed30 is pushing out way more than me and would litterally just drive off from me.
do you lose a little more power from transmission losses as a result of the LSD maybe.
BTW id still have the RS everytime
-
I previously owned a Focus ST (remapped first with Dreamscience but then changed to Code: Red). It had about 270bhp or so after that - was a lovely car which made a fantastic sound (even with just a sports cat) - plenty of gun shots that would make everyone look
All that taken into account - it was nowhere near as nice to drive as my standard Ed30 - the Golf is so much more nimble feeling with much better steering imo. My ST was lowered on Eibachs but still didn't put a grin on my face like the Ed30 - I guess having a 2.5 litre 5cyl up front has some disadvantages??
Would still love a blast in a RS though :happy2:
-
never driven an st but the tuned one with an instructor on a closed ring did a 8min 30 btg in redline last month, thats pants, but that heavy engine will not help as said above. back to topic i think the golf is in a class of its own in the hot hatch class, softer and more refind than the competition, good idea really as there is no competition, matter of taste.
-
a decent driver..
bollocks!!!

thats not really pants though is it, iirc the meganne R26R record sits at 8:17, 13 seconds off and without a LSD
-
That's what I thought.. I'd imagine the ST that was taken round by Redline mag didn't have a full on professional racing driver behind the wheel that knew the track like the back of his hand either..

the megs time is a full lap!!!! thats a good 30 sec longer, so 40 sec faster than the ford, my standard r26 has done a 840 in heavy traffic with a numpty behind the wheel :signLOL: i was there when redline did it, the white st on the cover belongs to a friend of mine,
-
That's what I thought.. I'd imagine the ST that was taken round by Redline mag didn't have a full on professional racing driver behind the wheel that knew the track like the back of his hand either..
it did mate, instructor, holds the fastest lap on a bile around there, the st is not a quick track car
-
O I C.. My bad.. Pants then.. :signLOL:
Didn't realise you had a R26 now bud?
-
yeah, ran out of room in the trophy!!! divorce so needed room for kids! miss it though, bought an mx5 for track as the meg is fast but little boring compared to the clio :signLOL:
-
Jesus, that shows how much of a track slag you are if the R26 doesn't excite you enough on track.. :signLOL:
Mate has just bought one actually, in black. Got it for a bloody steal IMO. Black, 07 plate, 30k, lux pack, xenons etc... £9400. :surprised:
Getting a little bored with the power already though, so I can see it taking a trip to Paul @ RS Tuning very soon..
-
That is cheap!!!! Good lad is Paul thought I had seen your name on megane sport forum! It is good but heavy on track!great on ring but sometimes you can't beat a 900 quid mx5! Lol
-
They are meant to be great fun, that is for sure..
-
We need to get you on track Ben, you not fancy it?
Are there any track day junkies on here?

Would love to, but with the Golf being a company car, it was always to risky. I know what i'd be like, i'd get carried away and end up on my roof in the kitty litter..
That and the fact I don't have a driving licence till next June too.. :ashamed: Be defo up for a trip to the Ring next summer though. As I would go super steady round there and go more for the experience and trip than anything else..
-
thats what everyone says ben!!! but you just cant help yourself :signLOL: before you know it your doing 140 with rear wheel cocking its leg!!! lol
