Title: And recommendations for double din units ??
Post by: woodzrs on January 04, 2014, 07:07:21 pm
After a new stereo and due to buying sofas , carpet and god knows what else my bird wanted , I'm on a budget . I want to get a rns510 but can't afford minimum £400 . I want a big screen , and be able to play my music thru it ? I've got iPhone 5 . Plug it in must be a rear entry cod don't want a lead out the front . Bluetooth stream music ? And want to make and receive phone calls . I'd love a lot more but what you lot saying ?

Zenec NC2010 is one option (if buying used ensure it comes with all necessary leads)

I have this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-GOLF-EOS-GOLF-JETTA-PASSAT-7-HD-Car-DVD-Player-GPS-Nav-Radio-Touch-/120947427862?pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item1c29074a16

Been great since I've had it and recommend it to anyone wanting to upgrade.

If you want any info just let me know :)

^ Any pics installed?  What does it respond like (slow/fast; as there promo video looks sped up)... does it cause battery drain on older models? Is it simple plug and play? :happy2:

Why do older model golfs suffer with battery drain ? And how csn u get Round that problem

Battery drain applies ONLY to OEM headunits such as RNS510, RC510, RNS315.

If going down that route, the proper fix is that you replace the CAN gateway to an L or above revision.

You would need to update your Can Bus Gateway for the VW Headunits such as RCD510/RNS510 on older Mk5's (circa 2007 or before)... some after market Headunits don't drain the battery, hence me posing the question above.

You need to wire an after market unit to a switchable power source i.e. a spare in your fuse box (i cheated and used my cig lighter) or you will have the same power drain issues. I'm running an Alpine double din in a 56 plate and wired straight in the battery is dead in under 36hrs. Grab a loom of eBay for a few quid and it even comes with the switchable power wire as a blank extension to do exactly this!

Really ? This is starting to sound like a mission

That is a different battery drain problem, though it may result in the same outcome.

If you buy a VW specific HU (like the Zenec, or Kenwood DNX521DAB etc) these come with a CAN interface box that give a switched live without taking a feed elsewhere.
I think Connects2 also make CAN interface boxes so you can use any old stereo and retain MFSW functions.

The OEM battery drain issue is firmware related to the CAN gateway.

Right I think I'm starting to understand . So the canbus gateway , is it part of my car and I plug new stereos in it ? Or the new stereo has a canbus thing with it , and once I plug it all in car this is where the prob comes from ? I looked at the link above and if u read description and scroll down to pics then the wiring diagram shows u get a canbus with it ? Is Riis to sce the drain prob ? Or am i not understanding the canbus thing

A 510 might look all sexy but the sq compared to an aftermarket unit is terrible! I upgraded from a 300 to a 510 wanting to keep it all oem but then changed to the Alpine (after advice from a local ice professional) and the difference is amazing even using only the factory speakers!

This is where confusion may occur...your car has a CAN gateway, this talks to all modules installed in the car. It is this module that has to be L or above with a newer factory head unit.

VW specific head unit's come with what is called a CAN interface, this is usually a slimline black box which talks to the car wiring - allowing it to switch on and off with ignition, put track info on the cluster, dim the screen when your headlights are on etc. Effectively making a non VW stereo act like one.

A non mk5 specific head unit does not have this CAN interface, so you simply need to take a switched live feed from somewhere. Ideally buy a piggyback fuse holder off ebay and put it straight into your fusebox.

Canbus is a separate unit somewhere under the steering wheel as far as I remember but I never messed with it as the cheapest I could find was 80 odd quid then you need to get it re-programed....seemed a lot of money compared to just running another switched feed!

Skard said it better haha hope you can make sense of water is really a rather simple thing when you get your head round it all :happy2:

No battery drain issues at all.  The only thing that you could want to do is wire a switched live to it as you may want to with any after market headunit.  The only reason you'd need to wire this in is so the headunit turns off and on with the ignition.  If you don't wire it in you just need to remember to turn it on and off using the power button on the unit :).

It only takes around 10 mins to wire a switched live to the fuse box though using a fuse tape (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADD-A-CIRCUIT-FUSE-TAP-PIGGY-BACK-BLADE-FUSE-HOLDER-/321088781277?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4ac261fbdd)

You just need to chop the red wire at the back of the headunit connect some wire to that then connect that wire to the fuse tap and plug that into the fusebox.

As I said you do not need to do that though if you're alright turning it off and on with the button.

Anyway here are a few photos for you :)

Don't get carried away and bid on this very cleverly worded advert for a VW RNS510 sat nav unit. Link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/V-W-RNS-510-SAT-NAV-2013-DVD-BLUETOOTH-SYSTEM-FOR-PASSET-GOLF-TIGUAN-/271363586322?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3f2e87b912).

The seller is well aware it's a fake, and is clearly misleading people into thinking it's a genuine VW unit.

I'm in the market for an upgrade currently rcd300 but surly aftermarket is better than rcd510 or rns510?
