Low oil pressure caused by PCV?
« on: June 09, 2025, 05:49:08 pm »
My BWA GTI threw a low oil pressure warning sign. About an hour before the sign appeared I installed a new PCV as my car was drinking all of my oil for some odd reason, so I determined it was the PCV. I know it cant really be the pick up pipe as that was cleaned about 200 miles prior to the warning light coming on. My question is could it be that I received a faulty PCV (it was an ebay PCV not a genuine) or that the balance shaft deleted itself?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's possible but very unlikely to be the pcv. In your case I'd get an oil pressure tester hooked up, and see what your numbers are like with the engine warmed up. It's the best way to see if something is wrong as you can drop the sump and find nothing obvious.

I wrote a guide a while ago on fixing a specific oil pressure issue I had from the oil jets/squirters. In it you can find the correct oil pressure numbers.

And if your oil pressure levels are slightly low over a long period the first symptom of damage will be metal flakes in the oil form your connecting rod bearings... So best to get it fixed ASAP if you haven't already!

And with the sump/pump dropped, you should go ahead and install a "Wasa Motor Oil Pressure Fix".

Not exactly plug and play though as you have to drop the pump and drill into it, so as it says on the page, a last resort. Would be good to know the oil pressure numbers at the different RPMs before taking a decision on where to throw time and money.

More than likely the oil pickup and or the oil feed lines need a clean out.  Happened to me early on in ownership due to poor maintenance.

Better safe than sorry  :jumpmove:

I haven't dropped my oil pan yet but once I do, I'm replacing those sprayers and adding this oil pressure fix along with a freewheel. Plus changing the chain and tensioner cause why not.
