Alternator potentially failing
« on: Yesterday at 03:21:42 pm »
Hello,

I'm driving 05 mk5 gti with AXX engine and recently ive stumbled on a weird electrical issue. While driving randomly the power just cuts out and the engine dies. Straigth after the engine dies, it wont turn on but all the usual electrical stuff works and the starter turns the engine but it wont just start.

If you wait a little while for the battery to level the voltage or just jump it with jumperpack or another car it starts right away and might be fine for a while, and ive usually kept everything electrical to minimum after this and its been able to usually drive home.

Clearly having less electrical load lets it run better and where it dies are related to alot of electrical acecssories turned on and the revs going low while starting or going really slow IE. parking.

Yesterday I just drove in circles and was reading the obd voltage (measured with multimeter and is pretty accurate with battery voltage) and on the linked picture on the right side of the graph, I turned everything on and drove in a circle at low revs and the voltage is just jumping around. Is the most likely problem just a dying alternator since the voltages turned pretty low while abusing it. Battery is new.

In the picture the drop in the middle is the car doing the usual dying while doing really low rev U turn, it started back up with battery booster and then the thick red bar is me doing the abuse test where the voltage was between 14.6 and 13 volts wich seems bad.
