Better brakes for TDI (280mm)
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:23:00 am »
I'm wondering if someone would be able to point me in the right direction for a better performing brake setup with 280mm discs?

I'll admit I'm rather clueless with brakes so be gentle!

A couple of options.

1. Get some decent discs and pads. When i had my 1.9TDI i went for Tarox G88 discs and Tarox strada pads. These are not cheap but they stopped so much better than the OEM kit, and once heated up they were superb. They are of course 4 million different disc/pad combinations so there are many options.

2.  Upgrade to the 312mm GTI spec from brakes, however this will involve changing your hubs.

I would go for option 1  :happy2:

Thanks, appreciate the help. I'm guessing the actual disc and pad combo is something which is best testing out to find the best.

I saw some OMP discs that were cheaper than the tarox g88. Is there any advantage of them being drilled, grooved and vented as the tarox g88 seem to be just grooved & vented.

It doesn't make huge differences if the discs are drilled or slotted
or both in you case. You won't go on track I guess.

The biggest difference comes from disc size, calipes (pot and pad
size) and pad type (friction).

Right, for the larger FN3 calipers (with 288 x 25 or 312 x 25 discs)
you'll need new hubs for 55 mm strut. You find find some used
hubs as some GTI owners go for the alloy hubs from the S3/Passat
(as me).

No matter if you stay with the stock calipers (FS III) or upgrade the
2.0 TDI/GTI ones better discs are highly recommended. Ate Power
Disc, AP Xtreme (= Brembo Max), EBC TurboGroove or even Tarox
is a question of your budget. I'd go for street legal Ferodo DS
Performance pads.

The former Golf GT (170 HP) had the same combination with 312 mm
front and 255 mm rear as you might go for.

I don't know the details but there is a newer option for 270 mm discs
at the rear which VW uses for some newer Sciroccos.
