Technical advice please?
« on: March 31, 2014, 05:59:09 pm »
Hey All,

I have a GTTDI Sport 170.

I was on the M1 when engine workshop light came on and I lost all power. Managed to limp into services and the car was running like crap, called AA who plugged it into VCDS and came up with  P0299 'Turbo charger under boost'. He cleared the fault and followed me for 10 miles and everything was ok. Light came on again 40 odd miles later with the same loss of power so I pulled over and switched off for 5 mins. The car was then fine?!

Drove the last 70 miles without a hitch and also 250 miles home 2 days later and is still running perfectly now. I was hoping for a free ride home with the AA!  :happy2:

I did admittedly take it easy on the way back and I had two less passengers and their luggage but 20 miles out I did put my toe down and the car was fine. When the light first came on the car was going up a slight incline fully laden so the turbo would have been under pressure.

There is no rattling and strange noises coming from the turbo and I can't see any obvious splits or holes in the pipework.  The car has 105k on the clock but has always been maintained regardless of cost.

After some reading, could be MAF sensor? I'm going to drop it in to the garage this week but wouldn't mind input from you guys first.

Anyone experienced the same? Any ideas what it could be?

Cheers!

Part is about £50 (can't remember exactly) and takes about 20 minutes to fit.

If you open the bonnet and look to the right of the engine on the rear bulkhead you will see the solenoid with 3-4 small diameter air tubes coming out of it. Thats that you're looking for

Is it a DIY job or do you think it's better off going into the garage. Would I get dashboard lights?

Thanks  :happy2:

DIY job and very easy :)

When mine started playing up i was traveling at 65-70mph, went to overtake a car and lost all boost and only got one warning light on the dash which disappeared once the car was restarted.

Just a quick update.

Scan revealed nothing at all!

Swapped out the sensor anyway so fingers crossed no dramas so far!

Thanks for all the advice  :congrats:
