Your thoughts on cambelt change
« on: June 29, 2014, 05:18:40 am »
I recently purchased a 08 MK5 golf GTI with 30,000KMs on the clock . Did comprehensive pre purchased inspection by the dealer and they appraised the car ( car was not purchased from them)

I asked dealer if I should change the cambelt and water pump , the service manager mentioned VW recommends intervals of 6 years or 180,000 kms for that's engine ( 2.0 turbo FSI ) but doesn't mean I have to do it.

Just wondering what are your thoughts on that ? Is there a way to tell the condition of cambelt to know if it should be done or not ?

Thanks

There is no reliable way of checking the condition of the cambelt, given the cost implications of it snapping and the damage it would cause I would get it changed ASAP.

It used to be every 4 years for cambelt or x amount of miles. Other things to check or do preventative maintenance on would be the Diverter Valve, PCV

Thanks , I asked the dealer to check those during their inspection and they said both were good. Not sure if they actually checked them or just said it ...

Checked the PCV myself with the method mentioned in that thread and it worked spot on. Not quite sure about DV as I have no tools to open and check it.

What's the recommended DV ? OEM or forge?

Is there a way I can tell what revision of DV is in my car without opening it?

I left mine on my old GTI to 5 years and 50k miles.

Audi (same engine) have longer intervals than VW so its just a money making scheme. I'd like to see a cambelt after 4 years service, its probably almost like new.

Yeah there seem to be differing opinions on it. I was advised to get mine changed ASAP from three different people.
