There are two types of steering wheel modules and the slip ring has to match the same type.

You need to work off the type that was originally fitted to the car.

Then the coding has to be done in one hit and in the order stated, as otherwise it just does not take for whatever reason.

The original module was 1K0-953-549-A and slip ring 1K0-959-653. Is there an easy way i can confirm if got a wrong or faulty part? I was following the website when ordering stuff and got the highline module (1K0-953-549-BD) and type 2 slip ring (K0-959-653-C). I do have another slip ring i got for free with the steering wheel, but its from a passat 3C0-959-653-B so not sure that it will work

Been planning to retrofit cruise control to the GTI and finally did it today.

Hardest part was fitting the missing control wire with mine being a 2005 and missing it. I made and then added the missing control wire as people ask stupid money for it,  by ordering the different male and female pins to fit the connectors etc.....fitted and worked perfectly. I also got a secondhand stalk 1K0953513G off eBay for £13 and went ahead to fit. I already have the highline dash and modules so was sorted there. Coded it up and all works great  For the total cost of £30 in parts.

Mk5 General Area / 2006 Tornado Red GTI Free To Collector

Hi, I'm hoping that the lovely moderators accept this post as it is a genuine offer. The background: I moved to Australia two years ago anticipating being back in the UK within twelve months. I have now bought a house and have no plans to return to the UK any time soon. This means that the 2006 (55 plate) Tornado Red MkV Golf GTI I left on my parents' drive in Staffordshire is no longer needed and I would like it to go to a good home. It has been SORN for two years but was running well before that, from memory it has done around 140k miles. It's not perfect - both front wings need rust repair, the passenger side track rod is bent (still perfectly driveable) and the cam belt is due for replacement (this has been done twice since I bought the car in 2014). The interior is in good condition and features black leather heated seats. It's on 18-inch wheels that have been painted gun metal grey to cover corrosion. I'm afraid I don't have any pictures of the car. I realise that I won't have any control over what happens to the car under its new owner, but I would like it to go to someone who will get it back on the road rather than use it as a donor. Obviously will require collection with a truck as has no tax or MOT.

Hello everyone, I own a mk5 golf that came standard with a 4 spoke and lowline cluster (not even outside temp, only milage and time lol). I bought a 1K0-959-653-C slip ring, 1K0-953-549-BD controller, MFSW and a highline 1K0-920-873B cluster. I installed the slip ring, controller and MFSW. Did the basic settings and some coding via vcds and everything worked fine for a couple of days. Then out of nowhere a steering wheel and esp light turned on. The wheel had no steering assist, was hard and wouldnt return back to the center on its own. After driving a bit the steering assist started working and the lamp went away, but esp remained on until i turned off and on the car. Now that issue happens randomly, sometimes during driving but most of the time when the car has been sitting for a while (like a couple of hours or overnight). During driving when it happens i can feel the steering assist coming back to life by a shake, like trying to return the wheel to center for a split of a second. I did do the basic settings when i replaced the slip ring, i tried loads of things but it keeps happening randomly. Did i do something wrong when installing? Did i miss something? I have no idea.
I did look up this issue and people said if the slip ring was bad then the MFSW buttons wouldnt work, but they do. At least the ones on the left to control the headunit. The ones on right dont cause i still havent installed the highline cluster. But thats a story for another time, gonna need to see what app i need to use to get it paired to the car lol
