It seems straight forward reading tthe how to... but, how do you set tdc on a dsg car? Also is this purely maintenance or is performance effected?

It was rebuilt with K04 at 160.000 and i have just booked time in Jan for 180.000km service. I get it looked over every 10.00km after the rebuild, oil, oilfilter and camfollower  :happy2:
It's a car made to be used, what can i say  :laugh:

It seems straight forward reading the how to... but, how do you set tdc on a dsg car? Also is this purely maintenance or is performance effected?

I would imagine TDC is the same on a DSG as it's setting the Cylinders to No.1 Top Dead Centre and nothing to do with the Gearbox. But i have never worked on a DSG engine.

It's a case of stripping off the Cam/Timing belt cover and rocking the car forwards or backwards in gear until the arrow at the side of the Biggest Cog lines up with the Arrow on the Cylinder head.

This has the effect of reducing the Tension Pressure on the Pump Piston so that when you put it back on you don't have to force it closed and risk bending/damaging it.

As i havent ever worked on a DSG engine someone like Stu,Hedge or Jonnyc will probably be able to tell you more.

The problem on a DSG car is that you aren't supposed to move the car without the engine running.

I have never bothered getting TDC before doing fuel pump / follower change.. All it means is that there is no preload on the fuel pump spring but so long as you remove the bolts evenly, and torque down carefully in diagonals then no problems..

Remove plugs, timing cover and anything in the way.

Stick big spanner (not me) on end of camshaft and turn to align the marks on the pulley.

I asked Jim @ JKM what they did and the answer was nothing.
All they do is apply even pressure on the pump and hold it straight while inserting the bolts.

i was told its a not an ed30 problem due to the cams not being the same as the normal gti as the duration on the fuel pump is not long or something down those lines. This was vwr who told me this as they said they only see the wear on the stock gti and not on the ed30 as they noticed this when they did the red vwr car as the they changed the cams to the ed30 ones when they k04 the red car

Didn't some of the early GTis i.e. AXX come with an A revision softer lobed cam that was subsequently replaced by the more robust B cam together with an updated cam follower?

The TSI system applied to the TFSI though  :wink:
