Top end tapping noise
« on: October 11, 2025, 03:34:33 pm »
Hi guys new to the forum I have a 2.0 tfsi BWA from a. Golf gti mk5 but swapped into a caddy van but be had a few issues. One being an engine rebuild so the spec is

JE Forged pistons
Bartek x beam rods with ACL coated bearings
ARP rod bolts
STD main bearings
ARP mains
Cometic head gasket
ARP Headstuds
Bartek 1.8T oil pump conversion with uprated pump
Bartek 1.8T filter housing conversion
X16 New valves
Super tech valve springs and titanium retainers
New seals and gaskets throughout
New stem seals
New genuine cam lifters
New genuine rocker arms
Gates Kevlar belt
New genuine timing chain and tensioner

Now you have a rough idea of spec and what’s been changed (may have not listed everything but as you can see that’s the bulk of it) here’s my issue

Ok so as you know I did a rebuild and it’s done just under 3000miles

When I used the running in oil the engine was quiet from a cold start never had any issues

As soon as I switched to 5w40 I get a tapping noise from coming from what sounds like the top.

So the car will start from cold and you’ll have 2 seconds of no tapping then when the revs drop the tap occurs after around 30 seconds to 1 minute the tapping goes and on the odd occasion will reoccur again when warm but it’s very faint

I found a couple of lifters were blocked and not jetting oil on the cam So I ran a couple of engine flushes and then replaced the lifters and rocker arms with new genuine vw parts alongside fresh oil.

Tapping still occurred I then checked the pressure which was low on idle as I converted to a 1.8T pump.

I have replaced the pump with an uprated unit alongside the 1.8t filter housing and now have 45psi on idle.

The car starts you still get nothing until then revs drop and then taps however the tapping is a lot less faint and does not reoccur again once it has a bit of temperature through it once warm.

Any advice would be appreciated

Can provide videos of the noise if that helps

Thanks
