I had mine done about 8 years ago. I bought an indicator stalk with cruise controls from eBay for about £17.50, and my usual indy installed it and coded it on when it was in for a service and didn't charge me - so it can't be a big job!

It's just a case of airbag off (the hardest part imo) , steering wheel off, change stalk then as above coding which can be done with vcds.

When I did it I was working at a VW garage and the master tech there did the coding on the factory diagnostic tool.

There will no doubt a forum post how to code it f you Google hard enough. Does appear some early mk5 require a wire fitting to the ECU.

Ross tech have a page about it. https://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Cruise_Control_Retrofitting_%281K%29

Thread on here from way back has some good info https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=35449.0
