Ignition stuck
« on: November 24, 2025, 06:06:31 pm »
Hi all,

As above having problems with the ignition being stuck, takes a lot of wiggling the key and wheel at the same time to be able to start the car. Will it be a new barrel I need or will there be something else potentially? Any way to know for sure without stripping it all?

Also do you think I can get away with aftermarket? Car is a 2008 mk5 gti.

Thanks

Yup, it's know to happen on VW's, many broken keys and ppl getting stuck in some remote area. Just had mine changed a few days ago, aftermarket one, guy came home, 130 GBP and 40mins later fixed and smooth as butter (this is EEU prices so expect more in the UK I guess). You'll need a new barrel and keys recoded if you don't have Immo off I think.

Cheers, I rang a local auto locksmith and they were saying I need to have the door locks changed aswell, do you know if this is needed?

I had same issues. Had Ignition barrel replaced. Did not need new keys.

Lowest quote I found (London) was £250 with 6 months warranty. Used a new part.

If you are based in London, you can reach out to my locksmith Muhammad on 07752548020. Decent fella.
