Golf Gti rattling/tapping
« on: April 14, 2026, 10:43:47 pm »
Hi, any help would be appreciated.
My mk5 gti has recently developed a tappet sort of noise that when driving will increase with engine speed but disappears when I press the clutch in. It doesnt make the noise when not in gear but there is more of a slight knocking and rumble at idle that again disappears when the clutch is pressed down, thinking that could be the release bearing or dmf. Could the noise when driving also be caused by the dmf?
Thanks in advance.

Agree........Sounds like the release bearing.

If going into the box to change, you might as well to it all (bearing, slave, DMF and clutch)..........a while your in there job.

If doing it DIY style like I did on the drive...........note the box is blooming heavy!! I did the wifes 1.6 FSI the week prior and the box even though it was also a 6 speed, was half the weight

Cheers for the reply.Yes was going to replace the lot while in there, just wanted to see if anyone thought it could be something else. I am doing it on the drive, is there much room to get it out?

There will be once you have removed the parts that have to come off like the driveshafts (strut can be worked around, battery off with mounts) etc

Highly recommend an engine mount as it will need to be lowered and tilted a little to twist slide the box off........getting the box back on was the hardest
