Attempted heating seat wiring loom... Disaster struck!

Very true... That's quite good, 2 day turnaround on parts...I ordered some bits like bonnet lever etc that should be here Thursday too then (in theory!)

Went for Steel-Mate sensors PTS400 were the model number - they look good, will get a pic up when I can be arsed to clean the car!!!

I have no idea how to use a multimeter, but I put it on 20V and prodded that connection between CEM and White wire, and it gave no readings just 0.

Probably mostly battery related. The hvac and cecm ones are because your not fully connected up yet.

The radio is because youve got an aftermarket headunit.

Is the plug you took out back in the cecm? Nothing else disconnected mate?

Do you reckon the CEM connector I used earlier was no good then? The wires are joined etc, and the pin, whilst not the same as the original pin, seemed to fit well enough.

But I guess the fact the multimeter showed 0 when touching the bare wires crossed together means no power getting to them? ( I tried putting the black connector, the red connector, and finally both on the wire - still no readings).

So youve repaired the wire you broke and your all connected up now??

Somethings not right there mate if your all connected up!!

You need to check the slots youve put the new fuses into in the fuse box have power and are not just empty slots!!!

Take the fuse out and test the top terminal ( the one where the top blade of the fuse goes in) with the red lead on the meter and put the black lead on a ground point as your doing it. You should have 12v either with the ignition off or on depending on what your after.

There was just 1 wire left mate, which was that white wire going to the CEM Connector C Pin 1.

A VW Specialist gave me a connector which was not the same pin type connector, but said to try it (he had soldered some wire onto it also so I could just join it to the end of the white wire).

I twisted the wires round each other, good connection, but still no joy.

So it could be either something else not right (maybe the seat pin connectors?) OR it could be that the PIN connector he gave me isn't OK to use, and it has to be the exact type of pin?

Have you tried clearing these faults? They might be lingering from when youve unplugged everything.

That new connector might be shorting out something in the cecm.

To be honest without seeing it all its hard to say mate sorry.

Hi mate, yeah I know what you mean I think I may have to take you up on that offer to have a look! Although my friend lives near Bromley (if that is anywhere nearby?) And i'll probably be around that way at the weekend with her if thats any closer than lakeside? (I can drive over).

Should there be a voltage on that wire? Prodding a multimeter into it surely would reveal some sort of current if it was active? The seats not heating up or anything.

I think I can ignore all the other errors, even after clearing, they come back, but I think the battery is a bit low which is understandable so will cause the others.

But the open circuit on the heated seats, is the same as when the pin was not even connected... So probably that connector is totally wrong (it pulls out very easily when you undo the locking tab - a stark contrast to the pain in the arse it was to get th e original pin out!)

Youve got one extra wire to the fusebox thats for your lumbar feed.

That says to use fuses 4 and 37 with 37 being a mighty 30A.  Are you sure you've got this correct??  What does the manual say are the heated seats fuse assignments?

The thing is Stu as i found out when i did mine is that the fuse layout in the hand book doesnt always marry up with the layout in your own fusebox.

As long as he has the corrrect rating of fuse and the location is either permanent feed or ignition feed it shouldnt matter?

Shaun the 'thin grey wire' youve put on a 15a fuse needs to be on a 5amp. But that wont change anything as far as getting it all to work.

I had to move the electric lumbar adjustment wire (big thick grey one) to another socket, as i'd made a mistake with that, but fixed that last night - that works no problem, it works without keys in the ignition.


This is what i've done;

Thick Red / White Wire - Fuse box port 37 (then fitted 30 amp fuse to this port for heated seats) - The various fuse layouts all seem to suggest this is for heated seats, so I just went with that one.

Thin Grey Wire - Fuse box port 34 (Then fitted 15 amp fuse).


There were no extra wires Lee mate? All I had is hooked up, out of memory it was;

2 x Seat Connectors (Passenger/Driver)

1 x Batch of 3 wires (to go to climatronic module rear)

1 x Batch of 4 wires (3 above to fusebox, 1 to CEM)

The only way to tell is to test continuity/power at the connectors under the seats.

It all 'seems' as if its all connected up right but hard to tell sitting at a keyboard!

Are you def sure those seats were 2007? the looms for pre 2007 are totally different.

It does matter where you connect to in the fuse box, you can't just go pulling 30 amps down the nearest live wire.

You need a Terminal 30 (Output directly from battery positive) or 30a (Output directly from battery positive (behind fuse))

The ED30 I *think* only came out in 2007 so I was guessing it must be either 2007 or 2008 seats that I bought.

Maybe a pin or two needs moving from the actual seat connectors, but it seems odd the electric lumbar works fine?

Stu - Im pretty sure fuse 37 has a direct output? It does seem thats the fuse everyone tends to use for heated seats?

In this situation I am more than willing to be proved wrong though! (And hope I am!)
