Car Vacuum Cleaner - Review....
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:09:37 pm »

Very much what it says on the box.

Powered via 12v socket in your car.

Made in Germany, or at least designed there.

TUV approved - Very confidence inspiring.

3-year warranty - Impressive.

Costs £6.99 from Lidl - Incredible!! Usually costs £9.99 (also incredible!).

The attachments can be slotted either directly into the main body or onto the hose. The smaller brush has stiff bristles good for carpet and the larger brush has softer bristles good for upholstery and even has a swivelling head. The thin nozzle really reaches into most of the tight corners or gaps. Suction power is good without blowing your socks off. The body is semi transparent which is useful for letting you see how full the dust container is. Both container and filter are washable. the power cable is 5m and so easily reaches the back shelf, although my car also has a 12v socket in the boot. The design really has been well and teutonically thought out.

I've had two very minor problems with it - both easily sorted:

1 - When used vigorously and 'pulling' towards you, a brush attachment can pull itself out. So it's better to use more 'pushing' movements.

2 - Again under vigorous use, the ribbed hose appeared to have broken away from the end knuckle but close inspection showed that assembly uses the ribbing as worm screw and so it was simply a matter of 'screwing' it more tightly together.

Previously I've used a Henry vacuum but it's always meant extending a power cable from indoors and the attachments are a bit too big.

What's not to like?

Dyson Root :happy2:

Best portable hoover out there, as powerful as an upright Dyson.

Downside has 6 minutes life, but in the grand scheme of things, you can hoover the car in that time  :happy2:

And it £99 last time i looked. :ashamed:

....Are you saying it only has 6 minutes of life before power nose dives? And how many hours to recharge I wonder? I probably spent about 20 minutes using my SilverCrest today.

It also looks pretty huge. Perhaps the nozzles and brushes are small enough.

I would have gone for the dyson if it has more running time. Unlike Saint steve, I actually vacuum the car thoroughly using the cylinder dyson at home takes more than ten minutes.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

There's no doubting the excellence of Dyson products but I hardly think it compares to the 12v SilverCrest when the wireless Root only lasts for 10 minutes max and needs 3 hours to recharge... And will cost you £99 (or thereabouts). Perhaps if you have additional use for a Dyson Root to the car interior, you can better justify the cost and powered time limitation, and it is a serious limitation unless you vacuum your car regularly every few days and only need it to work for a few minutes. It's more like once a month maximum for me unless some obvious dirt appears.

Nice review and i like the small length of the nossle to pipe bit as it helps get into corners far better.

I have been using n in house dyson for months, and hate it, always have to be careful of the pipe not scratching any of the paintwork. My parents have one of the cordless dysons, and say that it only has about 10 minutes life I suppose if you vacuum every week in the car then that would be enough, but it takes me at least 30 minutes to give the car and seats a good clean. Will be trying one of these £10 jobbies,
Robin, does the cigarette lighter fitment pull out as that was a problem with one of my old ones.

Been in the local Lidl today and they never had any of those :sad1:

They had some "brilliant" kids quilted jackets though

Looks good Robin!

Those dyson ones are ok.... but they are hard to manoeuvre and the batteries are 80 quid to replace!

....It's all a nice tight fit (said the actress to the bishop, or vica versa) but not so tight there's a problem.

....Thanks. It's always satisfying to share useful stuff and I quite enjoy writing reviews, even small ones.

According to Wikipedia: "Amongst other brands, Lidl owns the Silvercrest brand, which manufactures electronic products such as satellite and Freeview receivers" So in theory, you should be able to order one through a Lidl store. The local Lidl has just opened and so I expect that the £6.99 was introductory to entice customers. But £9.99 is still a very good deal imo.

Dyson do an attachment which now allows you to plug it into the Cigarette lighter. Battery time problem sorted, :P
These are excellent hoovers for using in the car........ :happy2:

....I don't think there's any question of the Dyson's strengths and the 12v plug (cig lighter socket) attachment would make all the difference. I guess that if I'd known about the Dyson earlier I might have got one, although the price would probably put me off as it's something I use only a few times a year.

It's not like me to be championing a much cheaper product
