50mm 1.8 are usually very cheap especially the canon variant, and they are way way sharper that most zooms. I think that you learn so much by shooting with a prime lens, they make you think more about framing rather than just standing wherever you want and twisting the zoom. Also, they have the obvious aperture advantage so will help you out with low light shooting and are fantastic to learn about DOF and its effects.
I see what you mean because the 50mm on a crop is quite tight, but for the money and what it will teach you, IMO they are worth getting straight away.

My 50mm was somewhat expensive, but it is a Nikkor lens as opposed to some cheap rubbish :signLOL:
They are a great lens, and you can get some fantastic shots from having a 1.8 aperture. DOF is great fun at that level :laugh:

180ish is still cheap for a lens with that level of clarity. :happy2:
