If you get some good quality lacquer (not Halfrauds carp) and apply a 'wet' coat they may not need sanding/ polishing, I only do it as you will achieve a better than showroom finish by using this method.
Tbh, if you haven't got a polishing machine I wouldn't wet sand anyway, as it will take a massive amount of elbow grease to fetch the finish back.
I may have asked this before, but where are you based? If you are relatively local I will machine polish them for you.
