£160 for new replacement vw key
« on: May 23, 2014, 12:05:45 am »
hey peeps, is £160 for new vw key, with the alarm bit worth it? not from vw, from a local key cutting place, I asked the guy how much, he hesitated few about 20 seconds with hmmm ahh and said 160, then asked him what about just a key no alarm, hesitated again and quoted £80, I then said cant you do it any cheaper? replied no, then I said is that your fixed prices or varied prices as a joke, then replied angrily with its fixed prices mate lol, so asked again why did you have to think about the price and hesitate then? he shrugged.. lol :fighting: :stupid:

Assuming its the model year in your sig, the later MKV's have encrypted immobilisers (immo4c) so I think it's a dealer only job that to program the keys.  :sad1: I know the earlier ones (2004-06) can have spare keys done quite cheaply, I managed to get a spare one done for a MY2004 Golf for around £50-60 via my VW specialist and everything worked fine on that.

Immo4c is not dealer only - plenty of people out there and can supply and code a key for a lot less than £160

I had a similar problem, most local key cutters I contacted could not do the job because they needed a special tool.

I could only find one person who did it for about the same price as you have been quoted which was still cheaper that the dealer.

My local key place, Fast Keys in Wickford (Essex), charged £130. Make sure they reprogram all keys so the old lost one no longer works.
