Yes there is supposed to be a cover over where the pollen filter goes. Mine was also missing when I bought it in February.  I'd get it replaced before winter comes round because it lets in a massive draft behind the dashboard. The car gets very cold if your driving at decent speeds.

Picked up a replacement at VW, think it was around £12

i can see part number 19 on the pic below but it does not look correct.

I think there's a module behind the glove box compartment, other than that I don't know why someone would want to remove it? Just to pass cables it's not really required to remove it...

The cabin filter has a kind of foam cover, fixed by two plastic screws.

It's number 13 that you want. Can't remember the part number though, sorry.
Part 19 is the foam cover that goes above the footwell.

I have the cover that slides in to hold the air filter in place. I need the carpet/foam cover for above the footwell.
