I will just change it the car has been neglected. Don't think this will solve the problem though. I think its the clutch??

At the moment you can flush the brakes and the clutch. The clutch might improve, if not you need to check the clutch cylinders. The slave is easy to replace, for what I've seen.

Mater cylinder seems easy enough slave not so much gearbox needs to be removed.

My diesel engine has the slave cylinder above the gearbox, so I think it's just the airbox that needs to be removed. It's different. :/

The good thing about the golf is there is so much info 99% of the problems are well documented. Feel like i'm grasping at straws with this one.
The gearbox on my car looks different from the pictures at http://partscats.info need to find out exactly what gearbox i have.
