EGR valve/ Glo-plugs

Matto:
I couldn't tell a difference when I removed mine. It is a preventative modification as opposed to a performance one. The EGR allows exhaust gases back into the inlet to be re-burnt, to reduce emissons supposedly. The after effects of this, is you get a build up of a horrible sooty gunge that will eventually clog the inlet and manifold solid.

Sometimes you can get away with just blanking it off. I did on my MK4 PD150 but some of the newer ones are able to detect flow through the EGR. A blanked off EGR = no flow and and EML, so the best way is to have it mapped out properly to cause any nuisance EML's. Tuning companies now do a Stage 0 which will do the required mapping to prevent this but with now enhacncement to performance if that is not your thing.

Heres are a couple of photos of my EGR and ASV at 20K miles.

Wow! So definitely worth doing! My car is approaching 8 years old but has only done 55k so its probably a blocked up mess in there! Seems to breathe ok though and fuel economy for my current usage pattern has been fantastic!

Andy:
Yeah definitely worth doing;I even took the manifold of and cleaned that why I was on doing it

I just had to do mine at the weekend I blanked it off at the manifold and removed the EGR cooler with the kit from Darkside - Highly recommend the kit from them! Due to the short metal pipe from the exhaust manifold into the cooler had split at the bellow section.

I know I had loss of power due to this, but it feels better than it ever has! So much more responsive at lower revs -didn't expect the result I got. However, I did also remove the air intake manifold and cleaned with air intake/carb cleaner + the ASV too.

Easy to do and well worth it for the result in my case.

Is the cleaning something that average Joe could do? I've swapped a couple of engines in my time but these modern things scare me slightly! :) (I appreciate I can't map it myself, but I figured I could take it to celtic tuning after for a small remap!)

Thanks :)
