How to Guides / Troubleshooting / Water leak
« Last post by sunny on Today at 01:18:14 pm »
Hi folk,
Due to finances my son has had to buy an older Golf so that he can work and improve the situation.  He has found it to have a serious water leak and only able to do a few miles before topping up the empty reservoir.  When stationary it is dripping from the front off side of the engine compartment but no wetness visible looking from above.  Any suggestions as to what part might need replacing please and would it be possible to Diy with only basic tools.  It is Golf TDi Se

Which codes? Check the battery and all of the engine fuses. If that's okay try removing the sparkplugs and turning the engine if it's smooth like butter probably the starter

Hi all, have a 2008 mk5 gti dsg. Went to the shop yesterday and after coming back to the car it won’t start so is stuck in a car park at the moment. All lights come on the dash and it turns over ever so slightly (about 1 second) but nothing. If I try to start it again soon after the last attempt it won’t turn over at all.

It does have a load of codes relating to the ignition switch but these have been there years, I actually replaced the switch in 2021 when the my first came up and they never went away.

Does this sound like ignition switch or possibly something else? Starter motor?

Was only in the shop for 10 minutes so whatever has failed has been sudden.

Edit: Cleared all fault codes and 4 codes relating to the ignition switch remain as static faults. So will give this a go.

Thanks

Thought it would try one of the cup holders...they are well made and get a personal note of them which is a nice touch

Depends on the tester and how far they are willing to go, but for the most part, any 200 cell cat will pass if revved high enough for a long enough period (4k rpm for 2 mins)

I just cut a section of my downpipe out and before each test I fit a sports cat. I use these kinds of clamps to hold the pipe/cat in place:

Check this post here. In the first pic I have a set of poly pads. These go above the spring and raise the car. I suggest driving your car as-is for at least 2 weeks and then getting some poly pads. Get larger ones than you actually need and machine them down to your specific ride height. Trial and error, always cutting off just a slight bit more. fortunately it's easy to fit/remove them due to the lower arm only being 1 bolt and the spring comes right off.

It's normal. All aftermarket sports springs drop the rear a lot on these cars cause it's quite lifted by default.

Also brought all the brake master cylinder parts so when time is available in the next couple of weeks, I’ll change it.

Small improvement - changed out my boot struts as the old ones were looking a little rusty. I didn’t think the old ones were bad but with the change it’s operating much more smoothly and lifting up much easier now.

Cost about £30 delivered for Stabilus (part number 5336XP for those interested) from Autodoc.
