Hi, finally had the gti rear bumper and back box fitted today. Had a bit of a long wait but it was well worth it in the end...

Here's what it looked like before:

The Rear bumper being painted makes a big difference :happy2:

You get the exhaust done ok?

 :congrats:

Roof spoiler would look a nice touch Mandy, and agree loose the badges :happy2:

Love the laser Blue when clean. My 2nd Favorite :happy2:

Thank you for your comments...

B3n: yes it all worked out in the end, my friend's dad who sprayed the bumper fitted the exhaust for me too, didn't cost me anything either which was a bonus.

I was actually thinking maybe a gti roof spoiler to replace the standard, nothing too drastic. Not in a rush for it though so just keeping my eyes peeled to see if anything comes up.

Might be on my own here, but I actually quite like the 'golf' badge, lol. I agree the '2.0 tdi' part is questionable... Have thought about removing it and replacing it with just the 'gt'.

looks great, do these come with the colour coded skirts and bumpers anyway?

Thanks...

No, I brought the side skirts off ebay (think they are gti/ r32) and had them colour coded. Had to have the rear bumper colour coded too, the black plastic is just not attractive!
Title: Re: My GT, so fresh and so clean...
Post by: Nickyboy on April 17, 2010, 11:32:47 pm
yeah i hate the black plastic, its something you expect from the bottom of the range, not the GT and GTI models.

i think you should keep the rear badges, the 2.0 TDI engine is a beauty  :congrats:

Coolio glad you got it sorted ok! And for free bloody heel good effort :happy2:
Do you know if he used an adapter? Or if he done it my method lol!

I didn't manage to find out what reducer size I needed so never got one, think they just welded it.

I was expecting the chop off point to be like yours, between the backbox and the centre box (not sure if that's what it's called!). Instead they cut the pipe after the centre box bit. I don't think it should be a prob tho but what do I know, lol! All I do know is that I seem to be getting bigger puffs of black smoke...  :signLOL:
Title: Re: My GT, so fresh and so clean...
Post by: B3n on April 18, 2010, 12:07:56 am
Oh cool bit different to what is usually done but hey it works :happy2:

Yeah you will notice a bit more smoke now as before it was angled at the ground its now angled straight out the back :pomppomp:

Yes I think I'm lucky enough to have most of the features, can't think of anything more that I could've asked for!

Been driving it around this morning on the motorway etc, I got a feeling this could get me into a lot of trouble!

I'm glad I chose silver (it was either red, black or silver), the colour of it works really well with the tinted windows IMO.

Thanks for your comments...  :pomppomp:

Hi Robin,

Its gone in for a little bit of modification... Revo Stage 2+ and DSG Stage 2, APR HPFP, Twintake, Twintercooler, DV, KW V3's, WALK, VWR ARB's, VWR Exhaust and VWR Brakes

I think I fell off the top of that slippery slope and am plummeting towards the bottom now!

Finally gave the car a proper wash and clean today...

I've recently had half of the front bumper resprayed as there was a big scuff mark on one side, done by previous owner... honestly.

At the same time decided to have the shark fin aerial colour coded too...

Anybody else set their left wing mirror so you can see the rear wheel rather than cars behind you?? Or is it just me?  :ashamed:

....I have my passenger side set to get a bit of both. It would be nice if one could program it to change when reverse is selected.

Like the coded aerial. It'll also make your car easier to locate in a big car park.

Hi Robin, hope you've been well.

My wing mirror does auto adjust itself when I go into reverse, I just like extra reassurance/back up! Lol.
I just have to kinda duck my head when I want to use it to see the cars behind.  :chicken:

Ah yes, yours is a later car than mine and has the auto mirror reverse feature. I have added an ultra wide interior rear view mirror for seeing vehicles behind better; And I don't fit the rear seat headrests unless I have rear seat passengers. Ducking your head is an easy habit to adopt.

Today...

Went down to JKM in the morning for a power run (thanks to R-Tech who arranged it :happy2:).

So here are the results, car is running on Revo Stage 1, DSG Stage 1, pretty standard apart from that. I bought a K&N panel filter (Green Cotton was out of stock  :sad1:) whilst at JKM, asked Keith to fit it after it had been on the dyno  :chicken: (not that it would've made a difference anyway).

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2209.jpg&hash=e16f88a114b7d3fe1cb4051669dce92e3b9a1fd9)

I'm pleased with the results, it's what I expected, curve looks quite smooth I think.

I run my car on Momentum99 at the moment but Keith said I should try to run it on V-Power as he thinks it will like it more and the torque should improve a little bit.

Nice results Mandy, its now official, your car is .08bhp more then my 276.5bhp on jkm's rollers i got with my bluefin at stage 1 before my Exhaust was fitted!.

Looking at your graph and mine, they even seem to have identical Torque curves . Bluefin seems to be near on identical to your Revo?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi154.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs264%2Fphilmcavity%2F19092009024.jpg&hash=18ef03c8ddeb7c028d9c1afcfc228b68f769431c)

Here is a graph showing what difference it made with Full miltek............
at stage 1, yet to run mine at stage 2 at jkm. Looking foward to Oct 16th
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi154.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs264%2Fphilmcavity%2F001-2.jpg&hash=657ad212d9d99aa9d676253a988b7449f1bb7cea)

So Roll on exhaust and stage 2  :rolleye:

Steve, that run was when my car had unidentified issues.  :P

It went back to JKM for diagnostics and here are the before and afters:

When it first went in...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2119.jpg&hash=5909bb969f72f5fd3109b679cf3b26dd26f60c1d)

And after the spark plugs were changed:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2118.jpg&hash=69c4ade7f81cf8031f231d3691911e3c1294a6ea)

Comparison between the two:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2120.jpg&hash=7921d2c0e8911f4b822285adc49bb3bfa4fc6b1e)

So, only a little bit more than your Stage 1 Bluefin...

BUT...

Still to come...

Mandy, seize the opportunity to paint those hubs before you install those discs. I forgot to do mine! Caliper paint by Savage is good stuff to use. Otherwise the silver hubs become a bit brown but not in a nice way.

exhaust on and you should see 300 lb ft of torque and an extra 10bhp :happy2:

After noticing an increase in the amount of suicidal grannys/school kids these days I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the original brake setup for something with better stopping power.

Had the S3 brakes fitted a couple of weeks ago, I decided to leave them black (as they are) because they only get filthy anyway. It was hard to capture them in the pics:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2184.jpg&hash=03016a89fe84ba9f139bd45b96e1be521112a920)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2185.jpg&hash=065d93c58efb0920dc13e1a387850abfd59c6ea9)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2186.jpg&hash=d625c3d8d8c73d182d7bccb1dbdc2535fe895491)

These brakes feel loads better over the standard setup, I could probably give myself/passengers whiplash if I wanted to . I can brake a lot more confidently now, especially when having to brake late.  Very pleased with them.

Next up:

Took my car to JKM last week for the Milltek TBE to be fitted:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2187.jpg&hash=adc19de254f51af688039aec3347953ac413ffae)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2188.jpg&hash=dbc90a05ccba0c20831d1af6d286199c9a066077)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FSAM_2189.jpg&hash=da48ccd4aa9b2c48bfd26d96b266c38b618cc2f0)

I went with the resonated version and am pleased with my choice . Normal driving, I would say it's a tad quieter than stock which is fine by me but when you are higher up in the rev range you can hear the difference in the noise, sounds nice.

I was surprised at how much difference the TBE has made to the way the car drives, seems to pick up speed a lot better, feels like the car has been unleashed in a way.  :driver:

Since having the Milltek fitted I have stuck to the same Revo settings, not sure if these settings should be revised or not?  :chicken:

Overall, I am very happy with both of these mods, definitely worth the money...

No plans to go stage 2 either!

I still got quite a few left over, but I've used two of the best ones obviously.  :innocent:

Why do you need them?? For your wife and kids... or for your wife when she's behind the wheel and you're in the passenger seat?   :popcornsoda:

Nothing exciting, just keeping things up to date.

Upgraded to Revo stage 2 at Inters, had a look into DSG stage 2 but was told there's not much point unless going stage 2+, which I won't be.

Why does it say REVO stage 1.5 in your sig?  :popcornsoda:

Lol, It did say 'Stage 1' but then I had it mapped to stage 2 but it wasn't quite running right so instead of changing to '2', I just added the '.5'.

It's still on stage 2 map now so I suppose I should change it really, but I haven't got an intake on it so its not 'proper' stage 2...

After much debate, I opted for the Forge Twintake, thank you to vrsCarl for fitting it for me.  I don't find it too noisy or intrusive at all just normal driving, something I was a bit worried about. My bf's just fitted the same to his car but his is manual and KO3, definitely seems noisier compared to mine.

Had the Osram Nightbreakers H7's and Osram Cool Blue 501's fitted for a short while, vision was greatly improved over standard bulbs but the look of them wasn't 'white' enough for my liking. So, got some Mtec Super White H7 bulbs and swapped them over today, the colour of them are a much 'cooler' white, no yellow at all- very happy with them! Will look into changing the 501 bulbs to Mtec too.

Osram Nightbreakers:

Looking good, agree the letters in black would make it look even better.

An idea for doing it, get a black touch kit in the same colour you ha the engine sprayed, be just the same as the nail vanish idea but with proper paint lol

I got the Mtecs from ebay, were only £10 but I think they have gone up slightly now. Bearing in mind the Osrams were loads better than original bulbs, when I put the Mtecs in, they didn't seem quite as bright as the Osrams. They are very good bulbs, just look slightly dimmer than Osrams because the colour of them are cooler.

Car passed it's MOT yesterday with the Mtec H7 bulbs so I'm happy with that and will fit the 501's very soon. Got VW to price match the MOT with Halfrauds so at £24.68 I was even happier. :pomppomp:

Finally got round to fitting my Mtec Superwhite sidelights to go with my Mtec H7's. Used on their own, I found that they don't light up the road at all. I'm not really worried though because I can't remember the last time I used the sidelights solely, I either have both sidelights and dipped beams on or no lights at all. I am happy with the colour of them, slight tinge of blue, not sure if they are 'too' blue for the road.

My oem fuel pump was being bullied by the Revo stage 2 map on the car so it was time to take the plunge and buy an APR fuel pump, luckily one came along at just the right time! This wasn't something I wanted to have to do or ever planned on doing before upgrading to stage 2, I thought I'd get away with it but, no. The oem fuel pump was about 35bar off so it had to be done...

Graph showing the oem pump struggling:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2Fgolf_pics%2FScreenShot2012-02-21at200500.png&hash=fb13dc24b679f4e3c63fb304dab73ff7a4629165)

So I took my car to JKM today and had the APR fuel pump fitted (note to self: mileage 45900), I believe the problem has been rectified and the car seems much happier to go. :driver:

So far I am very pleased with the new fuel pump and the performance of the car.

Yes I've bought some Victoria wax, just waiting for Mr Postman to deliver it. I've heard it gives the best results on red cars but hopefully will work ok on silver too.

I now have pink cherry palm trees from California Scents, not as good as the tin air fresheners though.

Next thing on the 'to do' list for the car is maybe have the front and rear valance wrapped, not decided if I want to do it yet.... :rolleye:

Just got a quote from Appleton Signs for the front and back centre sections to be wrapped, my bf's having the front of his splitter wrapped too, £90 +vat for both cars which seems reasonable. I just hope they'll do a good job of it. They are booked up for the next 3 weeks so, so must be a good sign. ()

This morning it was off to Appletons to have the front and rear centre sections vinyl wrapped.

I do like them done in gloss black but wanted to go for something different so chose a dark grey metallic colour instead.

He didn't wrap the exhaust bit at first, but I didn't like it so I asked if he could wrap it. He said they don't usually wrap that bit because the water gets to it or something and makes the wrap lift off.

I think it works on the rear particularly well but I immediately want to also see it on your black upper grill surround to match your vinyl'd front splitter.

Nice n subtle colour with the silver body.

Ebay has a wide range of vinyls. The one they used on my car was from Avery, they recommended the 8 series over the 7 series, I guess it's a little thicker therefore more durable.

He made it look really easy, but I suppose he's been doing it for a few years.

Great Job Mandy  :congrats:

Did my rear diffuser in Carbon3m quite a while ago but im bored of it now.

I keep meaning to get it done satin black along with the front splitter. I was gonna get them painted but the vinyl can be easily removed and put back to standard if needed.

Simon  :happy2:

Thanks Simon, I'll pm you the details. :happy2:

So after almost a week of having the springs fitted, I looked to have the wheel alignment done. I couldn't get in to Denmead Tyres (wait was too long :rolleye:) so just went to a place in Southampton. I believe the results are now all good but the front camber is not 100%, partly my fault though as I was 15mins late. :ashamed: I didn't get any castor measurements either.

If i remember correctly, Caster is not adjustable so that's why you don't have a reading for it. HTH

PS. received the key covers thanks.

Had a slight rubbing issue with the tyre and inside of wheel arch so have had a screw from each front wing removed.

Also had an advisory recently that there is a crack in my resonated box, exhaust hasn't even covered that many miles and not excessively old either. :sad1:

It's currently being dealt with though.

Rubbing with even just springs?

Yes, just slightly. Also due to the VZ's being wider and having a lower offset than the Pescaras.  :happy2:

The ideal colour combination on a silver Golf for me  :happy2: Looks very smart Mandy.

How many times did you have a go at getting into that space?   I'd have parked very defensively in an 'end space'. Can't explain the amount of times I've come back to find some family trash wagon parked 3 inches from my GTI  :fighting:  :fighting:

Are the VZ's 8.5J all round, or 8J wide remind me?  :happy2:
Looks good! It sits as I want mine to sit in fact.

My parking skills aren't that bad actually- parking sensors do help a great deal. :P That is the end space that I'm parked in, that's the kerb next to the drain, not a painted line. I always try to park on the end unless if it's raining then I'm forced to park inbetween cars and do a 'supermarket dash' type shop to try and get back to the car before the cars either side.

The wheels are 8J wide, sits nicely in the arches.

Thanks, I don't really have a strict cleaning/washing routine (for the car), it gets clayed twice a year, then every now and again I (or my bf) just put a layer of Collinite 476 wax on it. I find it such a mission to get that stuff off though! Shows what a durable wax it is, very tough! I almost die each time I have to wax the car with Collinite. :rolleye: Oh, and Autoglym Extra Protection Gloss is a great addition to make it shiny. :happy2:

What springs are they Simon and whats the part number? Eibach Sportlines use the same springs for DSG and Manual. :happy2:
Title: Re: Mandy's Reflex Silver Ed30...
Post by: maxload on July 01, 2012, 10:14:21 am
They make two types of spring , for DSG and manual. The DSG gearbox is heavier than a manual box hence the DSG springs are designed for a hevier car.

I might be missing something here but check out there website https://web2.carparts-cat.com/default.aspx?230=1&34=0,2047566&36=189&35=0&32=20064&14=4&10=C3C15488C186B7DEE040A8C00A3E2163279004&12=130

The springs I have are part number E20-85-014-02-22.

When I was first searching for Eibach springs for my DSG and Romany's manual, I too thought manual and DSG use different ones but after a bit of research it seems like they use the same springs. Both of us have exactly the same springs fitted, same part numbers, I think I might try and take some photos to show if there are any differences between our cars.

Here's just a few websites I've found that show the springs will fit both DSG and manual:

http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=9166

http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/427346/volkswagen/eibach-sportline-springs-kits/e20-85-014-02-22.html

http://www.candrenterprises.co.uk/shop/eibach-sportline-spring-kit-vw-10-04.html

http://www.haloperformance.com/Eibach/suspension/for/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF%20V/details/7920-443

http://www.carparts-tuning.co.uk/en/Suspension-Tuning/Lowering-Springs/Eibach-Sportline-Sport-Springs-VW-Golf-5-1K-Yr-10-04.html

You should just fit them to your golf, they'll be fine! :happy2:

There was a bit of a debate whether different Eibach Sportline springs should be used for manual and DSG golfs due to the DSG gearbox making the front end of the car heavier. I thought I'd try and take some pics to show the stance of both cars (one manual, one DSG) on the same Eibach Sportline springs. I think the drop of them both look the same...

Had a coil pack fail on me the other day as I was joining the motorway :scared:, had the car scanned (thanks Steve :happy2:) and the fault was found on cylinder 3. I have replaced the coil pack and car is fine again, also I have noticed a slight increase in mpg, or I think so anyway :chicken:. I'm not sure whether to replace all of the other 3 too as the car has done just under 49k miles now so they'll be a bit on the old side.

Also, came across my old golf for sale on Autotrader, still looks in good shape.

Yes Robin, I am aware of the 'campaign' but it only affects cars up to around March 07, I checked the part number on the coil pack that I removed and it was one of the ones that weren't affected. Carl has kindly offered me some coil packs that he's not using so I might as well replace the rest of them if I can.

I went to JKM today to have the Revo software update (Stage 2). There wasn't anything wrong with the old map but I thought I might aswell go for the update as I wanted to try the linear throttle map too...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fae36%2Fmandy71185%2FA0BAE5BC-112C-4E03-9D65-FB428082C238-953-000002967B68E1E1_zps4ce535bc.jpg&hash=c7b9e06a3bc6ca31bd71100bc267f0e59cf6ec5c)

I had a power run before the update and another one after the update. It made 6.2hp less after but I'm not too worried about that, I doubt I'd notice that on the road anyway. I'm really glad I chose the linear throttle map, feels like I am in control of the power delivery a lot more compared to before, definitely feels more progressive.

Settings went from B6 T3 F8 to B8 T3 F8. Jim said he could've probably upped the boost to 9 but suggested B8 is fine.

Nice smooth curves too (I'm referring to the JKM dyno plots - Honest!).

I'm prefer the look of the red one more... but you afr's are super smooth...

You need an s3 intercooler Mandy! :) It definately helps...

Lol, I was actually talking to Jim about intercoolers... The S3 one sounds like a good option, just so time consuming to fit!

...
I changed from my revision D DV back to revision G a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the car was making more noises, a lot of chattering- apparently not necessary a good thing so I will be changing back to the D revision. :rolleye:

Have you thought about THS Mandy?

Or there is that new make that I can't remember the name of but there was a group buy.

Its worth saving up for the THS if you can get one always seem out of stock.

I would only go Pro-Alloy/Apr over the S3 Intercooler, which is totally adequate for upto stage2+...

Oh yeah, what ever happened to the group buy lol?

At the moment I've got no intention of fitting any intercooler, if the S3 one wasn't such a pain to fit then I would've prob gone with that just to help the car along. Fitting wise the FMIC's seem like a good idea but I'm not sure how much lag (if any) they would create, heard mixed reviews... No plans to go stage 2+ anyway so don't absolutely 'need' one.

Lol I know, first thing Jim said to me was 'I told you you should've left it...' But the point of the software update is not for higher peak figures, just to make the power more useable. :happy2:

Looking at the graph though, i would say the red line is perferable. Higher peak power and smoother torque line. Not quiet sure why there is that big torque spike...

Very odd...

Yes the red lines probably do look better on that graph, I'm hoping after the car has had time to adapt to the new map that the curves may smooth out a little. You think that torque spike is bad?... I won't shock you with my previous one lol, had a big torque spike even on the old stage 2 map when the Evoms was just fitted- but obviously as it settled in, it got better (as shown by red curves).

I had my Polar FIS+ Advanced fitted today, with help from my bf.

Just a bit noisy in 2nd and 4th gears when gearing down, 2nd has been like it for ages (a year) and 4th has just started so thought might as well get it fixed. Vw have only 'looked' at the car and said there's graphite grease leaking and that can only come from the flywheel and they also suspect the mechatronics unit could be dodgy too going my the symptoms. The car drives nice and smooth and no other symptoms of jerking or anything... yet.

A bit annoying but nothing that can't get sorted. There's no point worrying about it, just drive and enjoy the car. :happy2:

Been given a couple of prices, depending on what will need changing:

- Flywheel, ~£1450
- Flywheel & Mechs, £2416.

I'm pretty sure DSG and manual flywheels are the same.

:scared:

I take the FW is more of an involved job with the DSG hence the very high price there.  You'd get a clutch and FW done for A LOT less on the manual box.

Christ, at 2.5k I'd be thinking of trading it and let VW carry some warranty for the next owner, its still running smooth you say.

Don't you fancy an Ed35...

With VW's labour at £102/hr, I can see where those high numbers came from lol! I did think about trading it in for an R or Ed35 but with my car valued at £8.5-£9 px, I can't justify spending an extra ~£14k, I'm not sure it's worth it.

My car has been out of warranty since Jan 2011 but I thought I'd try and ask them to put in for a warranty claim, no surprise it got rejected... After numerous phone calls here and there, i had a call from the Aftercare Sales Manager who said they'd agree to contribute 33% towards the final costs.I'm happy with that.

I'm pretty sure DSG and manual flywheels are the same.

They are different.  Both dual mass, but the manual has a clutch strapped to it, dsg doesn't as the clutches are in the box.

I have had to spend a few £££'s on the car recently...

Aircon re-gas, never had this done before so thought I'd better do it:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fae36%2Fmandy71185%2F5A422AB1-5387-4D86-8CA0-F3D06098DEB5-1146-0000026B9CBA6796_zps03daf309.jpg&hash=4cc9d02e4fb681595b3a7a569775177cd61fb891)

I have been driving a Polo courtesy car for over a week whilst my car has been in the garage. Nice little car, great sunroof but I don't like the DSG, needs a DSG remap lol.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi955.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae36%2Fmandy71185%2F845B4C9C-F4BF-4C46-9946-7584EA75CCD8-1146-000004707D22F818_zps7ab3867a.jpg&hash=6d9923417b1e9827c1b316b168ce77bc99be3d08) (http://s955.photobucket.com/user/mandy71185/media/845B4C9C-F4BF-4C46-9946-7584EA75CCD8-1146-000004707D22F818_zps7ab3867a.jpg.html)

So finally my DSG issues have been resolved, firstly a new mechatronics unit was fitted, didn't cure the noisy downshift, then new clutch packs fitted and DSG is now running very well.

So what did VW contribute bearing in mind they said the Mechatronics would cure your woes but didn't?
Title: Re: Mandy's Reflex Silver Ed30...
Post by: Mandy on August 18, 2013, 05:14:24 pm
Well, at first they said they suspected it was the mechatronics and/or flywheel, they agreed to contribute 33% towards the final bill. But when the gearbox was out, they said the flywheel was ok and didn't need replacing. They just changed the mechatronics unit, I paid £980.10.

Drove away and the clunk noise was still there in 2nd and 4th so took it straight back. They took readings etc from ECU and gearbox and sent it to VW, they come back saying the car had been tampered with etc and that the map was causing the issue. I told them the map is not currently on the car and hasn't been for the past few months (and the new mechs wiped the DSG map anyway), in the end they decided it was the clutch packs. I asked if they would put my old mechs unit back in and reimburse me as that was not the cause of the issue, they insisted there was actually a fault with my mechs unit so would've needed replacing, I don't know if I believe that TBH but not worth the hassle trying to argue that... I had to pay for the parts but not the labour, worked out about another £320.

Sorry to read you've slightly shafted with the mechs Mandy, if only someone diagnosed the issue properly in the 1st place...But in saying that, they have forfeited most of the labour charge in doing so..

Question now is, your need to properly wear in those new clutch packs with some subtle power mods ;-)

My edition30 has now been traded in to make way for the R. It was a fantastic car, the best Golf I've owned by far, I just wanted something a little newer and this one came up at the right price and spec, plus I got a reasonable part exchange value. I rang up and left a deposit over the phone rather quickly, beat someone to it by about 5mins. Me and Romany will be sharing the R and his red GTI. On Sunday we drove up to Suffolk to pick up the R, it was quite a long journey but well worth it.

The spec is...

- Rising Blue
- DSG
- 5dr
- 36k miles
- 1Owner
- Leather interior
- 19" Talladega wheels
- Cruise control
- Front/Rear Parking Sensors
- Winter Pack

I think that's about it... In the original ad it did say it had a reversing camera which it doesn't, we're currently awaiting an outcome from the dealer on that. It's had 4 brand new Conti tyres put on prior picking it up so should last a while, I hope.

No no no...

We are not planning on any mods yet, let alone BT!!  :P

Very nice Mandy, but then again I would say that!

Why can't you mod it btw?

Thank you Nathan.

We've still got 12 months warranty so the plan was to keep it standard for a year... It's going to be a little tricky, I can sense it already. :rolleye:

You'll only lose the warranty on the bits you make better, big deal! DO IT!!

It would be a good start to have an AWD car first before making it go faster lol. After modding the eddy to stage 2 I did say the next car would just have a stage 1 map and nothing else...  :innocent:

Thank you all, it would be nice to be able to tell you in depth how the car drives etc but it's been in the garage since Monday whilst they sort out the Haldex issue. :signLOL:

Initial thoughts are it is a joy to drive, everything feels tighter and newer and steering is sharper. Exhaust note is deeper than the ed and maybe slightly noisier outside, however inside it is surprisingly quiet. Inside the cabin seems more compact and slightly less roomy than the mk5, but not by a lot. Oh yeah, the needle sweep is pretty good!

Well after the original purchasing dealer weren't able to provide any proof that the necessary checks were done prior to selling the car, it has been decided by VWUK that they will be responsible for all repair costs for the faulty Haldex pump. They wanted me to return the car to them for the work to be done but they are 200 miles away so a bit inconvenient. Luckily we have a good relationship with the aftersales manager at our local VW and he has gone above and beyond to make sure the selling dealer got this sorted out swiftly. He told them we didn't want excess mileage put on our car so asked for them to bring a trailer down plus a new car for us to use whilst ours was being fixed.
So yesterday the trailer arrived at 6pm and I was left with a mk7 GTD, and a cheque for goodwill. Even though it's a diesel, the car is so impressive inside and out, so many gadgets that I'd not seen before and don't know how to use! The whole interior is just so different than before, feels a lot more roomy and the leather seats were so comfy I didn't even realise they were leather. There's a lot of nice little touches, one of my favourites being the door trims and kick plates that light up at night lol.

It is pretty awesome   worth saving and spending the savings on a 7R later on then on the 6R.

It does need a map though, very sluggish and you really have to give it some throttle to get it going, but that could be down to the car I had being new with less then 100 miles on it

Hallelujah the car is fixed finally and on it's way back to us today. As nice as the GTD has been to drive, there's nothing like jumping back into your own car. I am still furious with the selling dealer as they have done nothing but lie through the skin of their teeth throughout, they only admitted fault when I basically told them I had seen the fault logged on Elsa Pro so I know they are well aware of it. Serious crap company to deal with, full of arrogant pricks, not even a word of apology.

Anyway, back to the car... We have been looking at front splitters for the R to improve the front end look a bit. We came across this carbon fibre lip made by Garage Vary in Japan. Stephen8512 has one on his white R and it looked great in his pics, nice and subtle, not too loud and so big that you could trip over it like a lot of the ones I've seen. These lips are made to order so I think it'll be a good 2 months before we receive it, I hope it's worth waiting for.

Fancied a slight change of colour to the Talladega's, we wanted something slightly darker than the OEM silver colour yet nothing too dark as the design of the alloy can look a bit 'lost' IMO. We decided on a titanium colour in the end. So on Saturday Romany spent most of the morning/afternoon at his mate's garage helping to achieve this...

Wheels before:

And after:

I'm pleased with the outcome, the colour's just right for what I wanted, nice and subtle but enough to make a difference. :pomppomp:

We recently had a reversing camera retrofitted by Vag Tec, wasn't something I really really wanted but as I wasn't paying for it I didn't mind. The quality of the picture is actually a lot clearer than I thought which surprised me. Only downside now is we can't have DAB unless if we upgrade to an RNS head unit.

I've had the same RVC camera for about 4 years now and love it. The image is great in lowlight. The only problem is really in harsh light where the sunlight hits the screen and causes glare.

Yeah I agree, I don't often use the camera though, I still tend to rely on the parking sensors. :signLOL:

Nice result there Mandy  :congrats: ! You can still have DAB if you change your RCD510 unit to one with DAB which also accommodates RVC but is rare. Or try RNS315 with DAB and that has bluetooth too but screen is smaller. RNS510 with DAB is ace but nothing short of £750+!!!

Hope you enjoy your mod!! Cant wait to fit mine to my MK6 next week

So what turns the rear camera on & off & displays it?

I think it is wired in with the same wiring that turns on (and off) your reverse lights. When you put it in gear, it hits/trips a sensor and into action springs the RVC. Similar process for your reversing sensors. Especially if they display on your screen.

We ordered some LED interior bulbs from Modded Euros, we went for the DeAutoKey bulbs, worked out to be blimmin expensive especially with import duty added on so let's hope they are worth it! :rolleye:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2FGolf_R%2F12C28A65-B2C0-4BF1-A5AD-78949C813231-15362-0000076BF19855AB_zps477a3c97.jpg&hash=eddc45134b2ed34589a7a97b346d99745ff754ed)

When we first got the car we noticed a collection of dead spiders in the inner LED rear lights. It seemed like there was no easy way to get these out...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2FGolf_R%2FCB08A91B-ED27-47AA-8B13-CAF2F487EFB6-15362-0000076F0736B31F_zpse28bbb80.jpg&hash=adce283c3b38a1f0b815a8c0861350eb3d74445c)

These were very kindly replaced by our dealer today:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmandy71185%2FGolf_R%2FE8E5F285-E1B0-4C19-AD17-A9084052A037-15362-0000076BFA56C672_zps8fe197f5.jpg&hash=dcd4c4df31d9aa4f9a46ccabf8f7da161de3f1e6)

There was also a hint of white worm on the driver's kick plate so they replaced both kick plates for us too! :pomppomp:

As well as the above bits the car also just had a major service, DSG service and brake fluid change so should be good for another year. I thought we were due the cambelt and pump too but apparently the interval is every 5yrs on cars 09 onwards, I never knew that, learn something new every day.

Thank you Beddie, I did spend a few months looking for the right car, it was either an Ed35 or R, I guess this one came along in the right spec and at the right time. Your 35 does look stunning though, very nice colour too, I did look at one in the same colour. :happy2:

Now I just need to figure out if the cambelt/pump is due at 4yrs or 5yrs, the dealer has said 5yrs but I have read some people say 4yrs...  :rolleye:

Aw, glad you think so :)

We're really glad you're happy with it! Took a lot of work but turned out really nicely
It's mainly washing and drying where marks are inflicted, so if you don't already then i'd invest in a quality deep pile wash mitt with your usual 2 bucket and grit guards, along with a lovely soft drying towel, such as an Uber XL. Only around £40 and it protects your investment of the paint correction

Just a case now of washing it carefully with the right products and methods and she'll stay looking great for years to come!

Great to meet both you and Mandy  :drinking:  :happy2:

I will PM Mandy later on  RE the clay mitts as well

I will do a writeup for you and post the link.

Today we popped down to Monsterwraps to have the roof wrapped in gloss black:

Haven't updated this in a while, I'll try and do a quick catch up...

We had the R dyno'd in standard form at Surrey Rolling Road day:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fae36%2Fmandy71185%2F8F28E05C-AC02-43FF-9134-C10DBC606BC2-1336-0000015E312195E2_zps93d9dcfb.jpg&hash=43cb6e05278fd4afd639d63f5936505adb8a0b84)

^^^
A bit more torque than listed on paper.
.........................................................................................

Also fitted a set of new Oz Ultraleggeras in 19x8.5, wrapped in Conti Sport Contact 5's.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fae2%2Fremorrison11%2Fb0449657-dae2-42ed-ad64-c2a652b301b4_zps0868f19e.jpg&hash=f80dc72ee4c32a179a7e4e2b4c8c363e6f82af98)

^^^
The wheels are finished in matte black, not my first choice of colour but were much cheaper than graphite so they'll do for now.

Also fitted a set of McGard Ultra locking bolts.
..............................................................................................

A set of 2 way adjustable, front and rear, 24mm/26mm H&R ARB's went on:

...

As Revo currently have 20% off we thought we'd take advantage of that, took the R to JKM and had a Milltek downpipe put on and then flashed to Stage 2+, we are awaiting Revo to get back with the DSG map and that will be loaded on too.

Somewhere along the way we also had a LOBA HPFP fitted.

After driving around for a few days we decided the non- res TBE was too noisy, sounded like a tractor lol. As the car was booked in to have the seat base changed under warranty, VW kindly swapped our resonated section back for us...

Thanks Dave, had the wheels on a while now, just forgot to update my build thread. I'm hoping the brakes will be a noticeable improvement! Once we've got the Revo DSG map on we'll get it dyno'd, I'm hoping for around 340-350bhp. :happy2:

Mandy,
Do you not have any pictures or comments on the new brakes?
I thought they were being fitted on Friday?

Car went to the garage, then they realised there were no pins and shims in the kit. Jonny must've forgotten to send them back with the calipers, he's on hol for a week so will have to wait til he returns... :ashamed: :sad1:

He was my first point of call lol, spoke to him but he's 2 pins short. Offered me a new set but would seem silly to waste £50 when I already have some! :rolleye:

How are you finding your brakes Rich?

They are amazing. Really really happy with them... even though they do cost 4 arms and a dozen kidneys.

Had to remove the dust shields as they weren't big enough for these discs, not sure if we need to buy some bigger ones or just leave them off?

There is a massive difference in the weight of the calipers, I couldn't believe it. You can definitely feel the weight saving through the steering. :driver:

You don't need dust shields. Are those wheels 19", makes The brakes look small.
