Cold Air Intake Fitted - Too Loud? (help)
« on: May 20, 2025, 10:43:30 pm »
Hi guys,

Just today I have fit my new Direnza cold air intake kit, my engine cover was knackered and thought i'd do an upgrade in the process.

I can't help but thinking since the fitting, it is incredibly loud.. like almost too loud, inside the cabin and outside it sounds almost a bit like i have a blow off valve fitted?

I did remove my engine/bonnet insulation because it was ripped and sagging, but I have also read online it could be a knackered diverter valve, has anyone else experienced this and if so, help me with some solution, it sounds great when you are booting it, but at lower revs it sounds ridiculous!

Cheers

They are a little excessive in noise and a little boy racer in my opinion......getting old

I sold the open air filter and went BMC CDA which is enclosed and a lot quieter, but after a year or so reverted back to OEM......people are always selling on eBay the original cover/airbox.

I actually do like the intake noise, but it shouldn't be as loud as it is.. I have found a similar thread from 2017 and it looks to be that the diverter valve being replaced completely resolved the problem!

Is it the off throttle 'chatter' noise that is loud? if so that can point to a failed diverter.

Yeah, so it's very loud in all aspects but yeah when you let off the throttle that's when it really sounds like I've got a blow off valve of sorts. Way louder than I remember my previous MK5 being with the Ram Air intake fitted.

I have ordered a rev G DV to replace my existing one just to rule that out, i found this post from many many years ago and this is exactly how I would describe the sound I'm getting, his solution was a new DV so hopefully that resolves it.

If the DV failed, you would have heard it quite clearly even with the standard airbox setup.  The induction cone will amplify it even with a fully working one.

I could hear a fairly obvious off the throttle 'noise' I have also removed the engine/bonnet insulation as it was knackered so i've ordered a replacement for that too as that will be amplifying the noise. DV probably hasn't ever been replaced so I do have a feeling it will have something to do with it, similar to that post I have shared above.. that is exactly my issue and his issues were totally resolved with a new DV.

Update..

Fit a new Rev G diverter valve today, the old one didn’t look split but I changed it anyway. Doesn’t feel any different to be honest but the noise is still as bad.. is it really just the engine bay insulation that’s causing it? I’m a bit stuck now.. maybe it’s just ridiculously loud!
