I've driven a 170PS GT Sport TDi and the GTi.

To be honest, around town I couldnt tell the difference in acceleration and general power etc. Both cars seemed to burn away from roundabouts and junctions with ease. The diesel tended to wheel spin out of roundabouts - low down the rev range which I imagine was when the full force of the torque kicked in. But not a lot seemed to happen higher up the rev range. The diesel also felt a lot heavier on the front end. So much so that the steering felt like it was power-steered more to help combat the extra weight. In general it felt as if their was less response from the steering.

The GTi on the other hand would keep on pulling through the range and not give in like the diesel did. It was also just generally more fun to chuck into corners.

On a motorway though, I could see how the diesel would potentially surpise a GTi owner. But once you stirred the pudding (or in the case of us DSG folk - just smack the pedal to the floor) I'm sure the GTi would come out on top. Stock for stock ofcourse.

I believe it's also due to it having trouble putting the torque down. The 170PS GT Sport is bad as it is. Ask for one as a loan car next time your in for a service.

EDIT: I've just checked on parkers.co.uk and the 170PS GT Sport TDi runs 258lb/ft of torque. Same as an S3.

i most admit i would of said its got to be down to the torque  :smiley:

and i really agree with the round town driving and that the power does come in a big shovel full, low down  :driver:

With a remap i'm putting out 366 lb/ft in the GT 170. From 40mph the GTI finds it next to impossible to keep up. Good fun though  :laugh:
