Steel wheels for winter?

I'm looking into getting winter wheels with winter tyres and have found some good prices packages on my tyres

They are with 6.5 x 16 steel wheels

Will I run into issues with running steel wheels on a gti?

It's coming in at under £500 for the package deliverd with decent tyres

16" wheels will fit over 312mm brakes (standard GTI ones).

I bought a set of OEM steels earlier in the year for this purpose too as my M&S 15s don't fit anymore after putting 312mm carriers on.

If you knew a tyre fitter, pretty sure it'd be a lot cheaper buying four new tyres (~£280) and getting a used set of steels/alloys.
I just sold SEAT 16" rims for £100 to a guy with an A3 to use with winter tyres, plenty more like that.

If you're looking at spending almost £500, I'd get a set of 17s instead then they'd still fit after a brake upgrade.

I managed to pick my 15inch steels up for £18 for 4 on ebay

I bought a set of 17" Monzas with Hankook winter tyres for £535 on eBay last week.  I'd definitely go for secondhand alloys and shop around for tyres.

Think these are 120mm pcd, same as bmw or 130mm pcd same as Porsche/Audi Q5/Q7. Definitely not 5x112mm.

Just bumping this as I've put some OEM 16"x6.5J steelies on with winter tyres.

Only thing is they look skinny compared to the standard 18" alloys.  Can you get wider steels? 8Jx16 would be nice!

Seen this thread so I thought I'd post here instead of starting a new one. Anyone know how much I should put my 17" monzas up for ? 3 out of the 4 are in good condition but one will need a refurb. 2 of the tyres have good thread and the other 2 will need changing soon. I'd keep them but they are taking up way to much space in the garage

If I was to run winter wheels, which were narrower, say 6J versus the 7.5J of the 17 inch Monzas, would i need short bolts?

Nope.  The standard bolts are fine with steelies.

Just my opinion and based on experience.....it's not worth running winters unless you live in heavy snow/ice prone areas of the country. 

For people who've upgraded to Golf R front brakes, 16" steelies are a no go.  They are the cheapest price for winters.  17 & 18" winter tyres are expensive.....and frankly unnecessary in moderate snow areas because modern summer tyres are now so good, they grip at 0 degrees and lower.   PS4, PS4S and F1 SuperSport are good examples.

Obviously a full snow tyre will annihilate any summer tyre on ice and compacted snow, but as I say, consider your local conditions.  If it's not like that, save your money and just drive a bit more carefully.
