Diesel sounding GTI FSI-T Mk5 :(

john87:
Cam chain and tensioner...

My mate bought an '06 and it sounded just like this when warm, had the cam chain and tensioner replaced and noise is gone. These engines do make a tappety sound caused by the high-pressure injectors, but not like this!

MrACD:
Thanks guys.

I phoned them and they were very good, said they'd sort all the issues.  I mentioned the can chain and tensioner and they said they'll sort it.

As for the air con, I hope they can!

pudding:
Is the noise REALLY loud in the cabin?   Heard a diesely noise from my ED30 recently but when listening to it with the bonnet up, I can't hear anything from the chain area, just the mechanical pump tapping away.

I think when the chain stretches so much, the ECU then struggles to 'see' the cam sensor, or it's static position moves out of range or something, and should fault code it?

As for the Air con, it's notoriously weak in MK5s and never really gets ice cold, but it should definitely be cold!  Yours might need a leak test with fluorescent dye.  The condenser is common as it's right at the front and gets clobbered with stones.

Yeah at a standstill, like the lights it's embarrassing, I think people think I have the GT TDi made to be a GTi replica lol.

This morning from cold it was virtually silent, nice and quiet in the cabin then as soon as operating temp - clack clack it's turned into a diesel  :signLOL:

I didn't realise it never is ice cold but on the way to the dealers I left it on and it was kinda cold but still think there was more!

Hopefully it's all straight forward and they sort it out, I wrote them a little list of what I thought was wrong etc.  Bet they love me

I kind of have the same problem with my engine. I still don't know whether my cam chain and tensioner is ok or not tbh! I've just kind of ignored it for a while. It's not really loud in the cabin, you can definitely hear it chugging away but I'm.Not sure if it's the chain. When you lift the bonnet, there's a definitely a tick but it's high pitched, Im pretty sure that's the injectors.. but when you close the bonnet the pitch seems to get lower and it could be a diesely sound so i don't really know!
