Mk5 General Area / Rail Pressure Issues
« Last post by ZoliWorks on Today at 02:27:40 pm »
2.0 TFSI BWA

BW k04, RS4 FPRV but same issues on stock FPRV, intake, sports cat downpipe, r8 coils, bkr7eix plugs.

Stock fuel pump, stock in-tank pump, stock fuel pressure sensor, stock map sensor, stock injectors.

In 4th gear or above, the car is suffering from massive fuel cuts and losing rail pressure. I've replaced the FPRV but the issue is still there.

Another thing would be the car taking a solid 5 cranks before starting if it is left stopped overnight. The fuel rail fills up with air since it de-pressurizes itself. If I cycle the pump around 2 hours after stopping the engine, before going to bed, there's no more fuel pressure issue and the engine starts right up the next morning.

Where should I look next, injectors? Fuel pressure regulator ontop of the pump? In-tank pump?

Hello everyone!

This in my first post on this platform. I'm a proud owner of a golf mk5 gti USA spec, 2006 model.

Yesterday I went for a 100 km ride, and by half way (50 km) I noticed that the fuel gauge was half, out of nowhere. However the fuel consumption on the display, was the normal one, 8.5-9L / 100 km.
Usually on my gti, the fuel gauge does not move until you do 100-150 km, then it starts to drop.

During the beginning of the ride, I turned AC on, however it was smelling weird and I turned it off, together with the vent level (all to 0 level). Nevertheless, even though that the AC light was off, you could feel this strange smell (such as when you turn on AC for the very first time) and also there was still cold air coming from the vents (with everything turned off), even though that it was 28º C outside.

This is the first time it happens and when coming back today (again another 100 km) I had to stop by half way to refuel the car, cause the fuel gauge was dropping way too fast.

I have to highlight that I did not move the car for 2 months as I was on business trips and I do my yearly maintenance. Oil level, refrigerant etc... it's good, what do you think it can be the issue? It's the first time it happens after 4 years.

Thanks!!

Hi Carl,

Thanks so much for all the relevant info and files. I have tried all the versions you gave links to, although some are downloaded in .RAR and can't convert to ISO? Having said this, when trying to perform an update (As my RNS510 is stuck in boot loop) I get the attached/pictured error. - Software Loading Error (010306) Any advice on a fix or is it that the hard drive is poked? Thank you.

Are you running a lot of power? A big mistake people make when upping the power is forgetting to upgrade the brakes, if you're going faster you'll need to be able to stop faster too.

The R32 brake upgrade is the go-to.

Some small handling mods like anti-roll bars and anti-lift kits are useful if you're doing track days.

Other than that she looks pretty decent already :happy2:

Ha! I drove that car when I used to write for Evo back in the Noughties. My Mk5, a Shadow Blue one, also had a cam follower/eaten cam lobes problem when I bought it last September but I decided to dive in and replace the inlet camshaft. I had never worked on an EA113 engine before, but it all went surprisingly well and the car is as great to drive as I remember yours being back in 2005. I'm glad it's still around and being loved.

Mk5 General Area / What other mods should be done?

Just looking some advice on what can be done next in terms of performance or aesthetic mods. Was considering Mk5 Diamond cut monzas.

GKN-Lobro are OE, so would be a good choice.

I got a pair of new shafts from VW for a reasonable price on exchange basis. Think it was £500 for the pair. They were supposed to be refurbished but turned out to be brand new!

62, wow, good on you  :drinking:

Good info  :happy2:  Its great to see people take a scientific and detailed approach to these things rather than slapping any old intake on and calling it done.

Even 5% drift caused drivability issues on my Edition 30.  Doesn't sound a lot but it's still a large error the ECU has to work around when calculating fuel trims. I saw 8% error with my Racing Line intake over a week, which grew to 12% after a month of daily use.  Revo intake got up to 18% iirc.  LT and ST trims max out at 25% and then ECU runs out of options.

The 10-25% error intakes shouldn't even be on the market. They are utter garbage and destroy low end response.

Stock intake = 0-1% error margin.

Refurbished stuff is never as good as brand new, or in the case of TTE, completely reworked with a brand new OEM turbo as a starting point.

Same applies to the injectors. Just replace them with new ones. DI injectors don't refurbish well.

Where are you based? Most pro upholsterers can match factory cloth/leather.

You can still get the seat covers and foam bolsters etc from VW, but the cost is insane.
