nice work, it's always good to see the progress/updates on a car. I'll be the first to admit CW 3DR Editions are growing on me.

For those that may not know me, some years ago I had a motor bike accident that left me in a wheelchair (paralysed from the chest down) and I drive with hand controls, on the right hand side, Push for Brake – Pull for throttle, obviously has to be DSG.

The lads at VWR have done a great job  :congrats: and we have designed some things specific to my needs:

Extended roll bar to help me transfer from Recaro to wheelchair as the side wings make it quite difficult.

Fixings for wheelchair wheels and lock down points for frame.

Dug out the old Dremel and adapted the centre console to take a small fire extinguisher.

Still a few bits I want to do:

•Get a set of spare wheels with slick tyres, we positioned the roll cage to get them in the back,
•Tidy up the wiring looms,
•Template & cut some carbon panels in the rear,

I know it took a bit of time but the guy's I've met down at VWR have a passion for their work and it was nice to meet people willing to do One-of stuff, the car is immense to drive, it just squats down and f**ks of and the noise is addictive.

I know it would be a bit to hard to live with day to day but fillings aren't that expensive are they  :signLOL:

This is kind of Stage 1 of the weight saving, if I think I can live with it I'll go for the plastic windows, strip the doors and take out the Kenwood etc, their's probably another 40-50kgs that could come out but I dont want it to be un-driveable on the public roads, its got to get me to (and from) The Ring  :happy2:

Also I had to compromise a bit, the seats could have been a lot lighter but I needed them to tilt and slide, and the roll cage isn't light.

Not sure what it was before, but the DSG is always going to be quite heavy, still 251hp/ton is a good start  :happy2:

probably similar if not more.  afaik they are near identical stages of tune so power would be similar dependant on the dyno figures used to qupte the bhp/ton

however jonnys didnt have the roll cage

....So your seat shells aren't one-piece? I thought they had to be for racing.

I hope you don't mind my suggestion: Stunning new sig  :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: but would be utterly perfect if you cropped a small amount off the righthand side so that the roof aerial is exactly central. It's such a symmetrical shot that it's begging for it. IMO.

wouldn't cropping the picture ruin the proportions?  the site SW would stretch the sig would it not?

....You may have a very good point, Dave, but I'm not sure the site software would stretch it. Judging by mine I'm fairly confident it would hold the proportions of the original but I may be wrong of course.

Thanks for all the positve comments lads, I must admit when I saw it half way through, I thought what the f**k have I done.

The seats are Recaro Sportster CS, they needed to be tilt & slide so I could get the chair in behind the passenger side this does make them 14kgs each.

If (big if) it does ever go into a race series like the VW Cup I’ll need to change them, fit a full fire extinguisher system, extend the roll cage to the front and Increase the diamenter of the two spherical attachments in the groin area.

Also no carbon panels allowed in the VW Cup.

Incidentally you can see Matt on Beetle Crisis when he worked for Race Shack a few years ago (Discovery Channel I think), apparently he is the god of Air cooled VW.

Going to template and cut the panels in the rear, looking at fixings but only 1mm thick so countersinking is a bit tricky.

I'm pretty much snowed in, but I've got this to play with  :happy2:

Going to template and cut the panels in the rear, looking at fixings but only 1mm thick so countersinking is a bit tricky.

Lookin good Neil, we use a thing called a tinamun(think thats spelt correctly ) washer on the aircraft when its a thin skin to allow countersinking and can also allow for a bit of adjustment, I'll try and get a picture of said item 2 morra if you like :happy2:

there you go Neil, not the best picture but i hope you get the idea, they can be had in various materials and sizes :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi262.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii105%2Fgazbut72%2F033-2.jpg&hash=91d3d26819323778c9be361d2eb8cb0e8f947471)

you drill the hole slightly bigger than the underside csk, and sometimes give the component that your mounting to a slight csk, depending on material thickness. Hope that makes sense, probably make more sense when you have 1 of the washers in your hand :happy2:

I'm sure I can get you some if you require :happy2:

Thats mental. I got given the magazine you featured in when I bought my Eddy, got me looking at mods. Never got round to it and had to sell up  :sad1:

I went to pick up a car from ALD Automotives in Milton Keynes and that magazine is still on the stands there.

Managed to get a drive in a 335i and that was just amazing, loved the sound. Only got to drive it from Porsche to my work which is only about 5 miles. Very nice motors you have  :happy2:

I have cut and fitted some 1mm thick, 2/2 Twill Carbon sheets to tidy up the rear (carbonmods.co.uk).

Big thanks to gazbutS3 for getting me some flush fitting screw caps and reminding me of Rivnut fixings  :happy2:

Managed to do it with 3 no 950mm x 500mm panels although not all the weave is in the same direction, and backed the panels with Neoprene sponge to avoid squeak/rattle.

Hi there!
You have a great, great looking car. Your car is very close to what I want my car to be. There are a lot of great mods but, for me, the seats, seat belts and roll cage are truly awesome!

Since I am looking for a similar setup (not as radical), I have some questions, and I would really appreciate it if you have the time to answer them:
1. I see that you do not have a complete rollcage (you only have one in the back). Is this approved by FIA (is VWRacing a competition aproved by FIA?).
2. Is your car road legal?
3. My teacher (pilot) from a Rally Academy I attended some time ago told me that roll cages are illegal in France and Italy (for example) for road use. He told me that the fines are really big and it can even cost you the car. Do you know anything about this?
4. Could you please tell my what is the weight distribution in your car (if this is not a secret).

Have a great day and keep up the good you, you are an inspiration to me (I would say "to us all" but I can't speak on everybody's behalf).
Cheers!

....Aha! That explains why those cars with roll cages I drove back with from Nurburgring were all going like a bat out of hell through France!

Most folks I know don't like to drive a roll-caged car on the road without a helmet because banging your brains on a cage ain't nice. Trouble is that if you wear a helmet in an enclosed car on the road everyone thinks you're a dick and the Police might think you're road racing: "Who do you think you are then, sonny... Michael Schumacher Sunglasses Ron? [snigger snigger]"
Title: Re: Eddy goes on a diet (update)
Post by: rex on January 31, 2011, 06:37:50 pm
Yes you are correct . Helmet is mandatory for cars with roll cages for the reason you said  :happy2:. BUT, for NeilM, since he only has a roll cage in the back it is not mandatory. I would not like to wear a helmet every time and that is why I consider having one only in the back.
Title: Re: Eddy goes on a diet (update)
Post by: RedRobin on January 31, 2011, 06:44:02 pm
^^^^
Ah, you mean a half-cage (in the back). I hadn't realised Neil's was a half-cage - I better check his earlier pics.

I seriously looked into a roll-cage for mine. I wanted it ideally to be removable. But even a half-cage would seriously hack into a road car's interior trim and take serious time and effort to take in and out. I was advised that unless racing, for trackday events the Mk5 Golf's structural strength was such that a half-cage would be fine in most, not all, cases.
Title: Re: Eddy goes on a diet (update)
Post by: rex on January 31, 2011, 06:51:13 pm
Yup, I agree. The first time I went to Nurburgring some of my friends rented a GTI from "Rent a race car". This GTI also had half cage and the interior trim was not so badly affected. When I go next to Nurburgring (may 2011) I will ask Teo (the owner) for instructions. I am only concerned about the French or Italians taking my car because of the roll cage :D.

....The Italians will only take your car because they want to play with it  . The French will take it because you're English. Even the Belgian Police don't like the French cops!

I don't know, I've seen plenty of caged cars driving through northern France to and from The 'Ring.

im sure thats for cars that are registered in france mate, there was a point not too long ago when i think an induction kit was illegal. as RR says seen plenty heading for ring from calais with a cage :happy2:

how can you hit your head on the cage if your strapped into the car? or is it if your getting out?

Sorry for the OFFTOPIC. Well, I drove 2 rally prepared cars with roll cages. The head room was not to great and when getting in and out of the car, I had to pay attention. Second, because the head room was small it was likely to hit the roll cage with the helmet if not properly fasten or if the roll cage would bend. The guy who was using one of the cars in our national rally (Romania), put a lot of rubber on the roll cage just above his head (for me this is a indicator that he hit the roll cage sometime before  ).

Don't worry - The French and Italians can only impose the law on cars registered in their country as far as cages and mods are concerned. If you are from say Romania and you have a cage, they can do nothing about it if it is legal in your country.

Wiechers do 1/2 cages and they are TUV approved, a 1/2 cage won't be FIA, those rules only cover full/6-point+ cages as far as I know but it can/should be built to FIA spec and by someone certified to do so. I'm fairly sure Wiechers 1/2 cages are what is in the Golf/Scirroco rental cars at the Ring too.

Hi Rex, Tony's right about the cage, I'd have to extend mine to the front for full FIA, which would cut into the dash and arm rest in the front door, you would probably strip the doors & you can also do away with the crash bar inside the door if you went that far.

The 4 point Schorth Harnesses can be extended to 6 point.

I would also have to change my seats as they are tilt and slide, I have always wanted to keep it road legal and drive too (and hopefully from  :happy2:) track days and don't intend to race it although my mates only give me a year!!

I can see how it would be a bit dangerous to have a full cage on the road without a helmet but I've not heard of anyone in the UK getting done for it.

The weight distribution is:

 Everything you said makes sense. That is my opinion also. I don't want my car to be approved by FIA I just want to be better for track days, just like yours.
About the seats, why didn't you go with Recaro Pole Position instead of Sporter CS? You could save about 4kg per seat...

And about the weight... I am amassed... By my calculations you saved approximately 60kg at the back (I have 278 for back left and 263 for back right as stock with spare wheel and full fuel tank + some accessories ). Since I do not think our cars differ in the back, that is a great weight lose.  :happy2:
But you still have a noise heavy car (like us all). Did you do any stripping in the front (except the carbon hood which might save you 10kg)?
Because of this weight distribution does your car understeer a lot? Or how did you make it more neutral? I would suspect your car understeers and you get only lift of oversteer. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Is 1392kg the weight with the driver?

Sorry for the long list of questions  :fighting2:.
I would really like to meet you guys some time. Maybe at a track event. I've seen some awesome cars here and I would really like to see them live. Your car is a great contender for the first place

I wanted a spare set of wheels for the track and looked at OZ Alleggerita HLT's but discovered they wont clear the VWR 6 pot's  Big thanks to RR for checking the size of his for me, VWR have a scale drawing of the brake set up which was sent to OZ technical Dept in Italy, and none of their wheels will clear the 6 pot's.

These were on the shelf @ Awesome Gti and have plenty of clearance,

Neuspeed RSe07  18x8  in Graphite, nice and light 8.7kg, the VW badge fits  :happy2:

The difference:

BBS CH & Toyo R1R's = 22.5kg

Neuspeed RSe07 & Toyo R888's = 19.7kg

saving over 2.5 a corner  :happy2:

I wanted to keep them in the boot and swap them at the track but it was a bit tight.

Had to take out the tail gate linning.

Hi Jonny, what did you have to do to get it down to 1175kg? I think with the DSG and roll cage I'll struggle to get anywhere near that.

Mine was DSG too..

Well first of all it was weighed without fuel.. So say 30kg there if you were over half full when it went on the scales..

Recaro Pole positions, 10kg each including frames etc.. I think your seats are around 25kg each so theres another 30kg saved

No cage, that must be 50kg

Wheels I had Pro race 1.3's which are way lighter than CH's.. Around 10kg total loss there..

Turbo kit was 5kg lighter than OEM

Bonnet was 4.5kg, not sure how much yours comes in at..

Stripped totally A/C and interior like you so no difference there..

Brakes were project Mu which were 11kg a side.. Not sure if you got a weight for yours but I expect closer to 15kg as far as I remember.

Removed rear bumper bar 8kg

No headlight washers and light weight bumpers (cut out all the supporting plastics) 10kg

Thats about 150kg already and there was some other stuff too..

Still a LOAD of weight to come out..

1050kg would be possible :)

Jonny you were on a weight saving mission, well done.

I would have loved the Pole position seats but just couldn't manage without the tilt & slide.

I keep looking at the front doors, their must be a fair bit in those and a crash bar I think, Also changing the rear side glass & rear screen for plastic???

I have seen a replacement carbon roof panel...................  :rolleye:

Oh yeah.. And one of those too lol.. Thats almost 12kg on its own!!

Also cut down AC bracket was 2kg and cot down bolts and removed bolts from the inside was 5kg or so..

Carbon boot, wings, and poly carbonate the whole car will be 75kg+ saving on its own.. Along with removing electric windows etc thats almost 100kg :)

I wondered what that noise was throughout the service

That's a good one as the last one I went to at elvington was 98 and I got told to short shift as it was 104 on the back straight. Black flagged me and everything. They said not many track days are over 98 now  :sad1:

P.S. Is the camera in the right fog light housing?

Yes, gives a slightly odd view of apexes being ahead of the wheels and on one side.

Sorry for the offtopic...

Yup, that is why I asked.
I am only asking, isn't it better on the number plate or on the roof?
I think you would get better footage from higher up since you can see the track and the lines better...

Can't use suction mounts on UK tracks and it was the only decent place I could find on the Clio where it wouldn't get damaged. I do see your point though.

I've been looking for a large paddle to shift up & down to replace the up/down shift buttons on the steering wheel, the buttons work ok but are a bit small and can be hard to hit at times.

I ended up having a go at making my own.

The buttons only need a push of a couple of mm's and I figured their was enough flex in 2mm thick carbon to push them in.

I have it set, pull to shift up and push to change down.

Just wow, I thought at first mmm nice white edition but fair play for having the bottle to strip it out like that! How do you find racing with the hand controls? We have a car adapted for them at home and I find it seems to be no brakes or fully down even with the slightest of movements (although that may be just the setup we have)

Yeh they take a bit of getting use to, mates say the first time you use them its like left foot braking, all or nothing.

I've used them for a few years now, on the road a gentle thumb push is enough and on track its more of a fist full and a propper shove. You do seem to be able to feel the brakes through your hand, probably more than through your feet.

The real problem is your right hand is taken up with brake or throttle so just your left hand to do everything else, (rude hand signals, pie eating etc etc)  :signLOL:

They did miss out the bit about my relentless charity work for the underprivileged.

It’s so sad to see girls on the streets in Essex who can’t afford a fake tan or Vajazzle let alone a few extra cup sizes, please give generously.  :happy2:

Got her back from KPM last week after the Cam Follower failure, I was quite lucky the shrapnel didn’t do more damage.

However did need a strip engine clean to make sure no bits still flying around, couldn’t strip the oil pump so put a new one in to be on the safe side, went for an APR fuel pump this time and a noticeable improvement over  Autotech, also had an RS4 valve fitted.

While it was there I thought it would be rude not to have an Odyssey Racing 40 AGM battery fitted, put it under the passenger seat.

And picked up a Ctek MXS 3.6 to keep it topped up.

I also had a Lucas style cut-off switch fitted that enables me to disengage the electronic battery cut-off switch so I can turn it on when on track and it won’t drain the battery in normal use.

I’ve been trying to hold the spare set of wheels in place and have put a bar across the back with hooks attached that can be used to strap a single wheel or all four with a ratchet type strap or bungee.

Considered the amount of failed Cam followers overseas they seem quite rare in UK and Europe, scary to look at though. The tyre rack looks ace Neil, now you just need some of these along with wider tyres up front  :happy2:  :P

Hi baldwined, yeh bought it new from VW in Chelmsford, and take it there for a few bits, I'm just down the road so use M25, M11, A12 alot, with the Golf mainly to and from track days. Well spotted it usually just blends into the background  :signLOL:

Not carbon, but from what I saw at TEFF's R20, they should be lighter than stock. I think it only makes sense if you need some more room for the front tires.
Kerscher seem to be the best build aftermarket fenders I've seen. If you buy these fenders please post pictures because I will only buy these fenders in spring and I would like to see how they look before buying my own.

Neil, what tire and rim size do you use ? Me and rex will be buying the Kerscher fenders next months. For me they are a must since I'm now on 8x18'' TD 1.2 + 235/40/18 Toyos (wich are 245 in reality) + TT arms wich take the wheel out by another 7-8mm !

I thought about wider arches, I have two sets of 225/40/18 wheels which have OK clearance ATM, if I went a bit wider I'd look into it.

What are you doing at the back?

I think I know what Fuscobal will do... Firstly he hopes the back wheels have enough clearance.
Depending on the rear camber adjustment that might work...

Hi Neil. Can you please tell me who designed the roll cage? Did VWR tell you what bars you need? The "X" (in the center of the rollcage) does not exist in SteveP's car. Did VWR advize you to install an "X" instead of a single bar?
Thanks!  :notworthy:

Yes VWR use these cages in the race cars, I just wanted the rear but had the X members because if I ever extended it to the front it would be FIA certificated.  :happy2:

A DSG is always going to be harder on the brakes than a manual and I’d cooked them in 4/5 laps of Donington,  (I had to let Ross past in his R26R  :ashamed: it is 75kg lighter though).

Thought I’d try to improve the cooling to the front brakes  :happy2:

I do basically have the same air-dam from VwRacing but without the splitter because I won't be able to get the car in the basement anymore :( As for the rear I will go with a Reverie rear wing for about 70kgs of downforce ( chord > 225mm, span > 1400mm). Great project Neil, keep up the good work !

It was £115.00 + P&P, but as FUSCOBAL said be careful if you have to drive on and off a steep incline, I've had to raise the front a bit to get on my drive, and now have 4" clearence at the front as it sticks out quite a bit   :happy2:

Few Updates

New CamShaft

65k miles and 2 Cam Followers later, thought it would be a good idea to have a new CamShaft after seeing the state of my CF after just one track day and about 1000 miles.

You can see the damage on the end lobe caused when CF disintegrated previously and hpfp came into contact.  Should have changed it the first time but the Shaft looked OK then, cost  £255 + 3hrs, gaskets , sealant,  @ AMD.

AMD/AS Induction kit with Heat shield

AMD and AS Performance have produced this Induction Kit, looks well thought out, proper heat shield that works well to channel the air through the front grille.

90mm pipe work, 10 colours of Silicone Hose available, with nice smooth flow.

I’ll get some GoPro footage from Goodwood Trackday soon and compare it to the Forge TwinTake I had on before.

Do the cut outs in your scuttle make them adjustable on the car?

Neil

Have you had a chance to alter your fuel setting via the SPS and test it yet?  I remember you saying you thought it was holding back a little?  Your currently running Fuel9 IIRC you saying.
