How to Guides / Troubleshooting / Weird ignition on ticking, engine off
« Last post by wbbigdave on August 27, 2025, 07:27:20 pm »
as the title suggests I have a weird ticking noise and I wondered if anyone here knew what it was. I noticed it last night. I went out for a drive and stopped and I thought it was something outside the car in the wind blowing, but when I turned the ignition off, I realised that you were something internal. The engine doesn't have to be on for it to make this noise and it doesn't happen when the keys are in and not clicked round to the ignition on position. I have a YouTube link of the the noise listed here

Mk5 General Area / Re: CDL Swap on MK5 GTI

Complete CDL engine with turbo, intake, dv etc, CDL ECU, and if you want to save yourself the hassle of re-coding your instrument cluster, get the cluster from the cdl donor as well. Wiring should be the same between both engines so no need to swap anything there.

Your overall best bet is to get a cdl engine donor car and swap everything necessary, rather than swapping them piece by piece. If you only want to go stage 2, keep your bwa or fit 2nd hand injectors and k04 on it. A set of brand new injectors and a 2nd hand k04 will cost almost the same as an entire cdl engine

So what was the conclusion on this as I am going through the exactly same thing, AXX engine loom with BWA engine swap.

Did you end up getting a 1 Pin Sensor and did it work? Or did you do some kind of wiring alteration?

Also did your horn come on when in Ignition 1 before start? If so what did you do about it?

BCS Prestige Turbo back and skyline tail lights on. Removed the Oettinger number plate surround since this pic was taken, and fitted a plain black frame.

Got a new engine cover and oil cap.
Three screw holes were snapped and the top had been cracked since I bought it.

Ooft,

That's lovely. Where did you purchase the replacement?

Performance Modifications / Re: Cracked air filter housing on engine cover
« Last post by Bassman1974 on August 27, 2025, 01:29:00 pm »
I agree. I'd stick to the std intake and use a good quality std filter and just change it every year. The std intake gets nice cold air right from the leading edge of the bonnet, most "cold air" kits seem to get the air from inside the warm engine bay  :stupid:. The same intake was used on other VAG group cars so you don't have to stick to a VW one.

A stage1 tune really does make a difference, I had a Superchips Bluefin one on mine and it's been perfect and really gives a nice load of mid range wallop for overtaking, I found as std the car felt a bit flat. If the cars been as well maintained as you say then I wouldn't worry having a stage 1 tune added as long as it's by someone reputable.

R8 coils are mainly cosmetic, buy them if you want if yours fail but otherwise I'd leave them alone and save your money.

Worthwhile checking the HPFP cam follower but if it's done over 245k then someone's been changing it in the past, same with the oil pick-up, if it's had it's oil changed every 6k then sludge is unlikely to be a problem.

Good luck.

I mostly agree there, but the sludge is not primarily caused by lack of oil changes. It's the excess sump sealant used in the factory that gets into the sump and eventually breaks down into sludge. My car had regular oil changes and suffered oil pressure issues, solely based on the sump sealant issue.
